Doctor's Pregnancy Test?

I used a home pregnancy test the second day of my missed period and got a positive. Yay! There's not any history of miscarriage or chemical pregnancies from my family as far as I know (with the exception of an aunt with thyroid issues). We'd actually just started talking about and wound up pregnant immediately, a trait that runs in my family. I'm 4 weeks and already experiencing morning sickness, intensified sense of smell, etc., so we're pretty sure. But I wonder if it's still a good idea to get a doctor's test before my first prenatal appointment at 8 weeks. We don't have insurance at the moment (already applying for it) so excessive visits aren't ideal if not necessary. So I wanted to get some more opinions. Thanks

Re: Doctor's Pregnancy Test?

  • I wouldn't.  If you're desperate to test again just buy another home test in 2 weeks or so.

  • I think planned parenthood will do it for free if all you need is the test, mbut I thinking you got the positive on the home test, you're golden. They give false negatives but not false positives.

  • At my OB you have to go in for a PG test and ultrasound to confirm it is a viable pregnancy prior to your first OB visit I'd call and see what their normal is! GL!

  • With DS I didn't get my pregnancy confirmed until I was 10 weeks along. And this time not until I was 8 weeks. It's normal to not get a test done at the doctors until your first appointment.

  • Thanks! Your comments put me a lot more at ease.
  • My Ob doesn't even do a pregnancy test.  He just checked me, and said I felt almost 6 weeks along.
  • There's no need. A false positive is SUPER rare. And if, heaven forbid, you miscarriage, you'll probabably know. M/cs don't run in my family necessarily either, (I honestly didn't know that was a thing,) but I m/ced at 6 weeks, and I could tell what was going on.
  • If you're really wanting to, you can find some offices that do free tests or cheap (like $20) appointments to see a Dr.

If you really don't care to see a Dr yet, I'd wait.. POAS again. CONGRATS!!!!

  • I wouldn't bother. Actually, some of the home pregnancy tests can be more sensitive than the ones we use at our hospital. Only difference is that at hospitals they can draw blood and use that for testing, if necessary. Hcg shows up in blood before it shows in urine, so blood tests can be used earlier.

But, you have a positive home pregnancy test, so I would take that as a positve, and stop all of your meds (unless they're keeping you alive lol) and take a prenatal vitamin, and stop drinking :)

    Congrats!

My doctor doesn't even test. HPTs are really reliable now and they just take those as proof. The only time they do blood tests is in high risk or if you are bleeding.

Mine did the same thing with my first pregnancy, which did not help put my mind at ease.  This time around, I have more trust in the HPT.  Take a different brand & that may help your peace of mind.
