Going rate for babysitters?

So we left DD for the first time last night with a babysitter to go to a friends wedding. Anyways, we were on the fence about how much to pay her. She's 16 and only had to watch DD for one hour before her early bedtime of 7:30pm! All she had to do was give her a bottle and lay her in her crib. She stayed for four hours and we paid her $36. My SIL was yelling in my ear this morning about how that's too much. What do/would you guys pay a babysitter?

PS- Calling a babysitter really made me feel old! It seems like yesterday the parents (which were SUPER old in my eyes lol) were calling me to babysit. I guess I'm ALL grown up now! haha

  • IMO $36 for four hours watching an INFANT is average.

  • agreed $8-$10 an hour is probably what I would feel comfortable paying for an infant.  Even if she's just going to sleep most of the time.
  • I would have paid $20- maybe I am cheap?

Haha this is what my SIL said. I guess it just depends on the person. I was thinking $10/hr but then again, she is a 16 year old and she didn't have to do anything but sit around AND I bought her a pizza which was another $15 after tip. Guess I was fair....

  • We paid our babysitter $7/hr and he slept the whole time. That's the average infant rate for this metro area. If I have a teen babysit when we go to my rural hometown the rate is less $4-$5/hr.

  • We do $5 an hour per kid until 9pm then it goes to $8 an hour per kid.

We do the bump up because if DD wakes up it can be a pain to get her to fall back asleep.

Its also what MIL charges us to baby sit for us and so its just what we pay for who ever watches them now.

  • We would pay a teen the rate they charge or 12/hr and a university student/mature nanny 20/hr. We are paying for their time and in some respects loyalty. We wouldn't pay based on how easy the shift is.

  • I paid a recent HS grad $20 plus dinner to watch DS while we went to the movies and dinner.  We were gone maybe 4 hours, but he went to bed an hour after she got there and she watched movies the whole time.  She said that was her rate.
  • It really depends on where you live. Care.com has a babysitter rate calculator.

  • $20/hr!?!? WTH? Uh, no thanks. Where do you guys live? California. GEEZ. That's almost what I make per hour when I work!

Holy crap, I agree that is a crazy amount to pay.  When I'm at work I only pay my sitter $2 per hour.  That's pretty much the going daytime rate where I live.  We haven't had to get a sitter for an evening, so I'm not sure what the going rate for that is.

  • Around here teens can earn $11/hr working at a fast food restaurant. Experienced nannies earn 15+. Experienced and educated nannies who babysit ask 18-20. All that said, we've never left our daughter.

  • Just interviewed a babysitter and she charges $10/hour.  I felt like that was pretty low and was fully expecting her to say $12-$15 (which I totally would have paid).  She is 24 and in school working on her teaching certificate.  I live in S. Florida so I assume the going rates are higher here.  WHen I was in college (5+ years ago) I charged around $12/hour.
