Breastfeeding

Gassy baby

Hi my LO is 5 days old. We've been EBF since the beginning. Her feeding were improving steadily and she was getting used to drawing in my nipple since they started out very flat. Also the medela inserts have helped a lot. Starting last night she was getting exceedingly fussy. Like it took 30mins to help calm her down enough to attempt to feed her. Then she would refuse the boob. I had pumped some excess milk off the day before and earlier so I ran to grab the bottle cause I knew she was hungry. I'm crying the whole scared that she's going to refuse to eat from me at all.
Turns out she was very gassy. She eventually did feed. I usually feed her in the football hold or lay her slightly sideways on my chest and she's feeds that way. Seems to be the best for us with my nipple design. I did give her gas relieving drops. I could tell it was gas cause every time she burped or farted she got relief.
We switched to laying position cause the football hold squished her tummy.
My question is  does it sounds like gas to you other moms and if so, Are there certain foods that I would eat that could cause her to be gassy? I have also started to make sure Im getting good burps after feeding.
Oh and my milk did come in yesterday.
Thank you sorry if it's not clearly written. Im really tired today.

Re: Gassy baby

  • It could be something you have eaten that does not agree with her. I can not eat peppers, esp bell peppers, because it gives my little girl horrible gas. Might think what you ate yesterday that you have not eaten before that my disagree with her....

  • mine is almost 3 months and has been gassy since week one, but she's had other issues too. I can't figure out what's in my diet to make her this way, and I have cut out things and it doesn't seem to matter. foods to avoid, says her pedi, is stuff like beans, broccoli, cabbage, onions, etc...anything that could cause gas in you. some babies are just extra gassy. I give gas drops every 4 hours. not sure if they help or not - some days are worse than others. good luck

  • Some babies are just really gassy. In general though, whatever gives you gas will probably give your LO gas. The most common triggers are cow's milk and veggies like broccoli. My friend can't eat tomatoes while nursing. Weird.

Try gripe water-it's natural and tends to help everything get sorted out. Also, if you hold LO tummy to tummy and hold him/her firmly against you, it can put some pressure on the tummy and relieve the gas. I've also had some success with bicycling her legs to work the gas out. GL!
