I can't stop taking HPT's!

I am about 5 weeks, 4 days, and I am still taking a HPT once every few days to try to put my mind at ease! Question: If you have a miscarriage, would it still come back positive? What about a missed miscarriage? Sorry, just kind of freaking out this morning...as usual...;)

  • 4 weeks after my d&c from my miscarriage, I still had a positive pregnancy test.  Actually, we thought that I was pregnant again.

  • Yes if you have a m/c or a mmc the HPT still comes back positive until there is no more HCG in your body.

  • This early, if you had a miscarriage it would probably get lighter until it disappeared. I wouldn't worry so much though.

  • Agree with PP. It took months for my hormone levels to reach zero again after my m/c.

Mind you, that would take some time.

  • An expensive habit, but I have to admit I do it every few days too.  However... I bought a giant bag of HPTs online when we were trying to get pregnant, so they'd just be sitting there anyways.  I like to have one just sitting on our master bath counter reminding me :)

Unfortunately, yes, your HPTs will still come back + if you miscarry or have a missed m/c.  I had a missed m/c in 2010 and had to have  D&C.  The tests were still showing pregnant for days.  I took the ones that said how far along you are though, and the # of days slowly decreased (went from 3+, to 2-3 to 1-2 to not) over about 2 weeks.  This was due to the HCG levels decreasing in my system.  It helped be figure out that when I got a + test a few weeks after that, that I was indeed pregnant again (that was with DD).

Sorry that was long... anyways, the point is unfortunately the tests will not help you in any way to determine if you're going to miscarry.

This is true, but you would most likely have bleeding before this happened, and "know" you're miscarrying.

Yes it will still show positive If you have a mc. It takes days or even weeks for your levels to get back to 0. Stop spending time and money on that. Make an appt with your dr if you havent already.

  • Step away from the pee sticks!  lol.  You won't get a helpful answer from it in terms of detecting a miscarriage.
  • It is completely normal to be unsure, but I'd advise you to stop spending the money.  Soon enough, you'll have some physical signs of pregnancy that you will be able to relate to and be more convinced everything is going as planned.  Until then, just trust your body to do what it was made to do.  I know it's tough, but it's cheaper than $20 every few days for pee sticks!

  • Thanks, girls! haha "step away from the pee sticks..."

I will try to break the habit...but it's hard with all these dollar tree tests just sitting in my bathroom drawer. Guess I should save them for next time :)

  • I bought 100 of them for $10 when we started TTC.  I used exactly 3 of them, so now I've decided I might as well pee on them all before they expire!  It's kind of fun to see two lines show up everytime. :)  Seriously though, if this is a sticky baby, I have a ton of EPTs to donate to some lucky TTCer.
