Baby Names

Ever worry about the name you pick matching with baby?

With only a few weeks left to go I have been thinking about this alot lately. Did anyone meet LO for the first time and think the name you had chosen just didn't seem right for them? I know this probably won't be the case, but just wondering if anyone else has ever thought about or encountered this.

ETA: What got me thinking about it was in high school I had a friend that from the very first day she met me said I looked like an Elisabeth and would call me nothing else but Elisabeth which is a pretty far cry from my actual name. And whenever I she her now she still does it, over time though I grew to connect it to her and our friendship and could never imagine her calling me by my actual name (: But it has got me wondering about the names we chose not looking like they should belong to LO.

I know it is probably just silly but.....anyone else?

  • I knew a guy in HS who was "supposed" to be Trevor, but his mom said he didn't look like a Trevor when he was born and named him Tanner. Also, my mom wanted to name my brother Kirbi but deferred to my dad who preferred Parker. She spent the whole pregnancy getting used to Parker, and when he was born, my dad declared his name Kirbi.

I started second-guessing DD's names a few weeks before she was born but I didn't stress it too much because I honestly thought she was a boy. So, I had a moment of panic when she was born, but I took the leap of faith and went with the name we had chosen, and I am oh so glad I did. It is her to a T.

I think lots of people think about this, though, which is why some people take short lists to the hospital and wait to make a final decision until baby is born.

  • We have a short list right now and a definite front runner for each name.  If nothing better comes up in the next 10 weeks, we will start using the name to make sure we like saying it on a daily basis but we probably won't share with family. When the baby arrives, if the name doesn't fit we will go back to our list and pick something that is a better fit.

We had never planed on having a biological child. We wanted to adopt from an asian country, and name our daughter Alexandra. Now that I am pregnant, everyone has been saying, "if it's a girl, you'll name her Alexandra, right??"... and i just don't know....

I feel like that name was picked out specifically with a certain baby in my mind, and now that we're having a bio child, I don't know if it will fit...

So yes, I understand what you're saying.

  • My cousin had picked Sydney for her daughter.  When she was born, they thought she looked way too feminine for that name and randomly chose Isabella (this was 10 years ago before that name blew up). So yes, it happens.

  • I picked Callum and Lucas for my boys, and while they were in utero decided that Callum was baby A and Lucas was baby B. I just thought that was the way it should be, based on my impression of their personalities from within the womb and the feelings I had about the names. When they were born I knew instantly that it needed to be the other way around, though. Baby A was Lucas and Baby B was Callum. My husband knew instantly, too.

  • Thanks for all the imput ladies! Im sure you are all right when we meet LO we will just know :)
  • Abigail didn't look like an Abigail when she was born. She looked like a fuzzy bear cub, but I wasn't about to name her that!!

  • I think all babies look like "Sauls" and mine was no different.  A couple of weeks after he was born I started thinking he looked like an "Alex" but we wouldn't have changed his name to that.  Fast forward a couple months and now I can't think of him as any name other than his own.

  • We had an idea with both of our boys, but nothing officially set in stone.  We always ended up going with our first choices, but had some back-up just in case.

  • I think as long as you pick a nice name that you like, your child will become that person.

  • I have never actually gotten to birth and not thought the name fit but when I was pg with DD she was supposed to be "Hannah Lee" a few days before the ultrasound I told my DH that I didn't think that was the right name for the baby (we didn't even know she was a she).

Also we were originally planning on naming this LO Saul. But for as much as I love that name it didn't seem right.

  • I'm the odd man out, because I don't worry about this. I figure they grow together. Also, I think people who wait to see the baby in the hospital to name them are crazy. DD looked like a red, scrunched up little alien, not the beautiful vivacious girl that looks just like an Ainsley now. If I had to pick a name that suited her then, it would have been ET ;-) But that's just my opinion :-)

  • We have our girl name picked out but still working on the boy; however the official naming will come at the hospital.

I know some people who had named their son Jackson.  When he was born that is what they named him.  Two days later, the mom went to her husband crying and said, he's not a Jackson, he's an Owen.  She was so upset they literally went down and legally changed his name.  :D  So at least you know that is an option!
