So, yesterday I went to my first appointment, to get things rolling after I found out I was pregnant. The DR was so rude and unprofessional, I was so mad at the end of it, I couldn't even sleep for my night shift!
I am a nurse at the hospital where I had my appointment. Its a very small hospital, and I work closely with all of the physicians and nurses. I don't want all my co workers to know that I'm pregnant just yet. My doctor is on vacation until next week, so another one was covering for him. I work with this doctor all the time, and she is extremely knowledgable and talented. Which is why I was surprised at how I was treated.
First, when I sat down, the first thing she said to me was, I thought we cancelled this appointment. I said, no, I cancelled my last one. So then she leaves the office and collects the papers she needs to fill out. She sits back down, and says, Oh, this is sooo much paperwork. All I could say was, I'm sorry...I wanted to just get up and leave, as if I was a waste of her time.
So after all of the paperwork was filled out, which btw was not that much, she says that I need to go test my urine for protein and glucose (since I work there, I don't mind doing it myself at all). She takes my chart out to the NURSES STATION and leaves it OPEN in front of about 4 of my colleagues. AND WALKS AWAY!!!! The prenatal papers are green, and they are the ONLY green ones we have. Wow, was I mad!!! I shut the file, followed her into the copy room, and handed it to her saying "I would really appreciate some DISCRESSION, since I work here!" She says "Oh, I know, I won't say anything." I said, "No, but you left this wide open on the nurses station!" She says, "Oh."
After I tested my pee, I told her it looks like I have a UTI, (standing at the nurses station) and she says, "Oh, pregant people can only take macrobid." In front of about 2 other co workers.
Holy crap. I'm still raging about it. I can't even believe how unprofessional she was, and how she treated me, A COLLEAGUE!
Can I just say, after all that, I still havent even told my mother, so it feels like the entire hospital knows, and my mom doesn't.
UGH!!!
Re: First Dr Appointment NIGHTMARE! *Rant*
I have chronic UTIs, so I was actually on a low dose Macrobid or 10 months (YIKES!) but I don't mind it.
definitely!

This, her superior needs to be informed and you need to find a different practice, however, it's a careful balancing act since you are also employed there. My friend who is a doctor and currently pregnant is going to another practice 25 minutes away.
Im so sorry this happened to you, I'd be so mad!

That's terrible! I would definitely report her! If it were me, I'd also switch OBs to somewhere where I didn't work if at all possible. Of course, maybe your regular OB is nicer, but if it's a practice, you are bound to see this lady again when someone else is out of the office.
Yeah, I am pretty sure I would be filing a Hipaa violation. Also, If you didn't want anyone to know I don't understand why you were going there for your prenatal care. There is always a chance that people will find out somehow. If there is a billing concern and the billing people need to ask questions they tend to go to those in the office about it. There is always a chance that your information will get out. While I completely feel the Dr. on your apt was extremely unprofessional and her actions need to be reported you in my opinion are partially to blame for going to that office for your prenatal care when you were so animate on not wanting anyone to know. As a nurse you should understand how easy it is for things to get discussed or information to be passed for proper medical reasons.
In the future if you don't want any of your info shared or any news released I suggest going somewhere that people don't know you on a personal level.
I live on a tiny island, there is nowhere else to go unfortunately.
Shes not my regular GP, she was covering for mine at the time. He NEVER would have done that. She is only an ER doctor, not usually doing office visits. She would not be present at my delivery, as our hospital is not equipped to deliver except in emergency situations.
When she left the office with my file, I thought she was taking to the secretary (which I was fine with, I knew it had to be done, and the secretary is extremely professional) to be faxed to my OB, since she was referring me there. There was absolutely no reason for her to leave it on the nurses station.
this! seriously? wow.... sounded like she was treating you too much like a co-worker and not enough like a patient, she kinda completely forgot her bedside manner.
My first thought was, "wonder what she did to piss the doc off?' That doctor sounds like she has a stick up her arse.
With that said, my first two appointments (nothing like that), I thought my doc had some crude bedside manner but I ended up LOVING her after pregnancy. Keep her around for all three.
I am Canadian
no worries about paying for it.
I tested my own urine to keep things Quite. Also to help out the other girls working, since they looked busy.
I saw her because she is usually a fantastic dr and never expected this. I will talk to my gp when he gets home.
I am afraid that if I complain on her that it will hurt our work dynamic. And that is very important since we live in an isolated area and have to work in some pretty crazy situations (recessitations and such). And I feel bad, maybe she was just having a bad day.
Ugh!
