Hypothyroidism?

I went in for a regular physical the other day, and the doctor's office called today and told me they think I have hypothyroidism.  I've already called my OB and am going for a 2nd opinion/doublecheck on the bloodwork, but it's definitely got me nervous.

Do any of you have this?  Have you had to do anything differently during the pregnancy?  After reading online about the effects on baby, I want to get this settled and treatment started ASAP if I do have it.

Re: Hypothyroidism?

  • Thyroid levels will actually fluctuate a lot while you're pregnant.  So that could be the case, or you could just be hypothyroid.  But if you are I strongly urge you to take the medicine while you're pregnant.  For me it (before pregnancy)  totally changed my energy levels.

Again, it could just be something you have to deal with for 9 months and possible postpartum.  I know my SIL ended up hypothyroid after he second baby.  So good idea to get a second opinion, but definitely go in and talk to your MD/OB about what you need to do.

  • I have hypothyroidism, had it for 3 yrs. My ob-gyn says I will have to get my TSH tested more regular because sometimes it fluctuates throughout pregnancy and he wants to be sure that I'm getting enough hormone. I take synthroid everyday. I feel fine.I haven't had to do anything really different. My ob-gyn says that his patients that had hypothyroidism and were pregnant never had any complications as long as you take your medicine. I hope this helps.

  • You absolutely need to stay on top of this...here is an article that gives a brief description of effects, etc...  It is pretty on point - I have done a significant amount of research on the subject inclusive of multiple medical journal articles on it.  I had my thyroid taken out in 06 and been on replacement hormone ever since.  The good news is that the medication is safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

  • Thanks, yall.  I'm definitely staying on top of it, but the timing stinks - I can't really do much til Monday now since I haven't heard back from either office.

This is completely out of the blue for me - I've never had any health issues before and I was only expecting the call saying my paperwork for insurance was ready.  I'm trying to find out everything I can since the guy from the doc's office just said, "you have hypothyroidism.  I'll call in your prescription,"  as if it was absolutely nothing.  Granted, it's not life-threatening, but the call seemed very uninformative for someone just being diagnosed with something.  I'll definitely NOT be returning to that office!

  • Yes. I had it before getting pregnant and then they had to up my dose last week. I can always tell when it gets off because I get a crazy thumping heart when K lay down.

  • Yeah, they upped my dose 100% since being pregnant.  But I tell you it has helped me feel a ton better!

  • This was me last pregnancy. I've never had any issues but luckily they test your levels now. I was on a low dose while pregnant and it was fine. My levels were ok after I had my son but started creeping back up when I was TTC do I'm back on it now. This pregnancy has made them a little wacky too.

I never had any symptoms either. I was told a lot of people don't. Good luck to you! If we're gonna "have something" this isn't a bad one to get I suppose!

  • This is my 2nd tri post about a thyroid question. The girls' responses might give you some insight and perspective on this... it might give you an idea of the care people get, questions to ask, etc. They were really helpful to me!

  • I have been hypothyroid for 5 years. My last pregnancy I had myself tested every month(blood draw). Even though my doctor told me to have it checked every 8!weeks. I'm glad I was adamit about having it done every month because my levels changed significantly from month to month. I was on a different dose every month until my eighth month. Then after you deliver, before you leave the hospital, have them check your levels again.

I have had hypothyroidism for a few years. I stopped going to one doctor when her med tec wouldn't tell me my actual numbers over the phone!  She said I had to go to the office for that.

Both my mom and one of my sisters have it too, and my bother has hyperthyroidism.

Sonce taking levothyroxine, I no longer hit the snooze button!

  • i was diagnosed with it while we were ttc....we were going for infertility treatments, and they found that my thyroid was underactive....we couldn't do anything until my levels leveled out...

so i've been seeing an endocrinologist for the last year...turns out it runs in my family (my grandmother and my cousin)...it's very important to keep up with it...i had to call him as soon as i had my bfp and i've been going every 4 weeks to have my levels checked...as it is i've had to have my dosage changed 2x...

the only issue i've had with it so far, is that you have to take the meds (i take levothyroxin) on an empty stomach, and then can't eat for half an hour (some people say an hour) after taking it....so my issue is that i'm most nauseous in the morning...and i've thrown up my pill every now and again....so it makes it harder because i really can't eat anything for close a while after i wake up....

but it is important to keep up with...and i noticed when i started taking it last year, that i was definitely less tired than i used to be, and less cold all the time...i had no idea that the reason i was so tired was due to my thyroid....also had no idea how important it was for reproduction...
