Baby pee

So waiting on a call from the pedi but maybe you guys know something.

Today DS has had plenty of pee diapers but they are all a rusty orangish brown color.

DH thinks its from something he ate, but I have never heard of food changing pee color before.

Anyone experience this? If so what caused it?

Re: Baby pee

  • When R was a newborn he had this or something similar.  They told me not to worry and that it was just concentrated urine...I don't know, but it went away after a day or so.  It bothered me every time I changed his diaper though because it kind of looked like blood.

Hopefully it's nothing and goes away soon!

ETA: Just remembered, they called it "brick dust".

  • He has not had beets yet so its not from that.

Does brick dusting also make LO clingy and fussy? He wont eat anything solid today which is odd cause he loves food. He wont nurse much either.

When I try to google it I only get results for animals lol

  • I don't remember R having any other symptoms but he was only a couple days old when he had it.

Try googling concentrated urine, I got some results relating to brick dust.  I definitely think that if he's having other symptoms like clingy, fussy, not eating, etc. you were right to call his pedi.  Hopefully they get back to you soon!

  • I was told that's a warning sign of baby not getting enough milk. Try to push extra feedings!

     https://www.askdrsears.com/topics/breastfeeding/faqs/getting-enough-milk-how-tell

The color of the urine tells you whether baby is getting enough milk to keep him adequately hydrated. Pale or water-colored urine suggests adequate hydration; darker, apple-juice-colored urine (after the first four days) suggests that baby is not getting enough milk. If your baby is not getting sufficient amounts of milk, you may notice a "brick dust" residue on the diaper, due to urate crystals from overconcentrated urine (a normal finding in the first few days), which should disappear after increasing baby's milk intake. Talk to your doctor to determine if your baby needs extra milk during the time he is learning to breastfeed more efficiently.

It could be a UTI, sometimes you can have one without a lot of symptons. It would be hard to tell in a baby without taking him to doctor. I hope whatever it is, its over quickly...you have had one rough week!

  • Lucas had brick dusting when he was dehydrated the other day. The ER said its concentrated urine with uric acid crystals. Has he been nursing regularly?

ETA: is he having regular # of pee diapers?  He have tears and saliva? Could he have coxsackie ????? Fever????

I keep trying to nurse him but he is fighting it and so I have given him some shots of water with his med syringe (no needle of course) to try and force some fluids on him. He wont take a bottle or his sippy cup today. He does not look dehydrated though. He has had 4 pee diapers today and they are all the same rusty color. Some more than others. No tears but yes lots of saliva.

He has a small fever of 100.3 in the arm pit. Not sure on how normal that is.

He has no blisters or rash and so I am not thinking its coxsackie.

  • When Ana was a few days old she had the Brick dust pees as well.

Maybe get some pedilyte and see if he will drink that? Ive given it to Ana before when she was sick. She wont drink it cool thought, it has to be warmed up (just a hint).

  • The Pedi never called back :/ I just tried to call to see if the nurse could just transfer me to the doctor instead of wait for a call... They were closed! Its 2:30 and they are closed until Monday.

Ugh. Now to figure out if we need to wait it out or if we should just take him to the ER. I feel so bad for the little guy.

I hate it when that happens! :( My pedi is famous for not returning my calls and it drives me crazy!

I'm sorry, I hope he gets better!

Does the pedi have an after hours line or is there a nurse's line at the hospital to call?

Hope he's feeling better! Keep us updated!

No after hours line for the pedi. But we did call up the ER line. They recommended trying prunes incase it is a UTI, and pushing fluids. If he has another off color diaper in the morning or his dehydration does not improve to bring him in for lab work.

Right now its a monitor close and try not to freak out kind of thing. I hate seeing my little guy uncomfortable in any way.

Also I dont know if it is from the diapers he is wearing or what but he is starting to get a little rashy :(
