Talking to LO

So I know how important it is to talk to LO but sometimes I just don't know what to talk about (we have pretty lazy mornings so not much to explain etc) so I have started reading whatever book I'm reading out loud to him..that way I get to do something for me (read) and it is benefiting him.. is that weird?

Re: Talking to LO

  • Not weird at all.  I'm generally a quiet person, so it's hard for me to figure out things to talk about all day too.  When we do anything (diaper changes, bfing, housework, tummy time) I just talk through the process of what we're doing.  I'm sure I sound ridiculous.  Reading a book aloud sounds like a fine way to talk to your LO for now.

  • I am a quiet individual myself... So I had a hard time at first talking to my LO. Its important to talk to them because it helps with development. So, like you I started reading to my LO. I am student teaching in the fall so I have a laundry list of books to read. Currently, we are reading Homer's The Odyssey. Other than that I just sort of talk about what I am doing or what we are doing... Example, "That's a lotta poop... lets wipe that up..."

  • Lo and I talk about the weather, I tell her what I hope to get done for the day, we talk about her lack of sleep, we chat about her brothers and her daddy. We sing alot too. The glory of it all is you can say ANYTHING to your LO and it doesn't matter, just so long as you are talking to them.

  • As long as you are talking I think it is beneficial...probably not best to read out loud a book like fifty shades of grey though ;)

Haha I have not read that but my friends mom tagged all the sex scenes just to keep track of how many there were and I saw all the tags! Oh goodness! The book I'm reading right now has had some swear words and a few sexual references..I just read those parts to myself lol

You are good for a couple of months, once you have a toddler they would parrot back the inappropriate parts at the worst time! Like DS1 yelling across wal-mart how big his peepee is and that Daddy said Mommy did not have one...

I keep forgetting, besides during feedings, dressing and changing, to say things out loud since I am home alone all day.  I read her a book last night and today but she was not a fan she just cried.  :)  I have the TV on as background noise so I guess she hears different voices when she is awake and I am not talking.

  • I'm so starved for adult conversation I talk to lo and my toddler all the time. The sad part is when the toddler who doesn't speak English yet "talks" back to me and I answer like I knew what he said.

  • I'm kind of a quiet person, so I have to remind myself to talk to her. I'll find myself just sitting and staring at her. When I do remember, I usually talk to her about the dog (her "fur-brother") and in the process usually end up talking to the dog also. There's not a whole lot of intellectual stimulation going on for me these days.

This is what I do too.  I talk through what I am doing with him.  In the past week he has been smiling at me so much more and giving me a lot of eye contact so I make sure when he is doing this to keep encouarging it by smiling back and telling him how cute he is, etc.
