If your LO takes a pacifier..

Did you have to "teach" them how to use it (if so, how?!)? My LO will NOT suck on a pacifier, he more "chews" on it, which obviously means it doesn't stay in his mouth at all. I have tried  5 different kinds (in a couple sizes/shapes) and it's the same story. I am not going to be totally heart broken if he doesn't take one but sometimes I know he just wants to suck so it would be kind of nice to have as an option.

  • DD will rarely take one. It's not that she doesn't know how to keep it in her mouth because she will sometimes suck on it for quite awhile but usually, she just spits it right out.

  • "Happiest Baby on the Block" suggests using "reverse psychology" to keep the pacifier from falling out. Put the pacifier in LOs mouth, and when he starts to suck on it, give it a gentle tug as if you are going to pull it out of his mouth (but don't actually pull it out). LO should respond by sucking harder on it. Wait a minute and then do it again. Repeat the process 10-20 times each time you give him the pacifier. This trains them to keep a firm grip on the pacifier, and it has worked well for us.

  • Maybe he just doesn't have a big urge to suck.  When my LO isn't interested in his paci he will chew on it and spit it out.

  • My LO will only take the Soothie pacifier (like the one from the hospital)

  • I think that some babies must have a stronger need to suck. Beck acts like his life depends on keeping his paci in his mouth. :) He can keep it in without dropping it for 30 minutes! That is why I had cracked nipples :)

  • I would like to figure this out too.  There are many times I feel DD is just nursing to suck.  When we try to give her a paci she gags so badly she nearly throws up. I'd also like her to take one considering it helps to lower the risk of SIDS.
  • My son took it automatically; no problem at all!
  • I've found that the NUK brand is the only one she keeps in her mouth... maybe because it's smaller?  Could try it...
  • Yup! this for us too, but we had been given some Soothies at our shower and for some reason they are smaller than the ones at the hospital - LO loves them even more.  Not sure if the hospital ones are just a different generic kind thats a tad larger?
