Poor sippy cup skillz

My LO hasn't figured out the sippy cup, straw cup, or cup cup.

She gets bottles at daycare.

Once she's 1, daycare wants to move her to the next classroom.  No bottles in the next classroom.

I am freaking out that she can't use a sippy cup!

Am I being irrational?

I hear "just keep trying, she'll figure it out!" but we've given one to her at dinner since she was 6 months old!  You'd think she'd have caught on by now.

  • I don't think you are being irrational. What does daycare do if she just can't use it? I know my DD is not anywhere close to being able to use one on her own. She will drink from it if we literally tip it in her mouth, but even though she can hold it and put it up to her own mouth, she will not drink from it. She will, however, bang it against any and every surface she can find.

I don't have any great advice (obv since I cannot get my own kid to do it!) but daycare will need to give you some kind of options, right? I mean, she won't go thirsty ;)

  • She won't even drink from it if we tip it.  She is weird.

I asked around (I know some other moms at the daycare) and I guess one boy used bottles in the room but everyone talked about it like, can you believe this boy is STILL on bottles?!?!?!?

I also wouldn't mind if they held her back - I'm in no rush to move her to the next room.  But the teachers are already doing food before bottles now to prep her I think.  I think I need to talk to them about it since it's only weeks away now (eek!).

Nina tucks the sippy cup next to her side in her high chair.  Then eats.  Then pulls it out when she's done eating to bang it around.  Like I said, weird.

  • I can't remember, but I'm pretty sure Tim was close to 1 if not after 1 before he started using the sippy cup. Some kids just pick it up quicker than others.  Nick has that down pact, but that's because it's food related.... crawling ,he's not interested. I know for a fact Tim still had a bottle after 1 and Nick probably will too even though it's just one a day.

I would talk to DC and tell them your concerns and see if it's possible to keep her where she is for now, since you said you kind of prefer it that way too. Or maybe they can let her go into the new room with the bottle still. They might be able to work with her to get her to use a cup too.

  • Are you giving her the traditional hard plastic/rubber sippy or something more like this learner silicone one? https://www.drugstore.com/nuk-learner-cup-with-silicone-spout-6-months/qxp261929 Luke was able to figure out a regular sippy after using this. If she can use one of these would daycare maybe allow in lieu of a regular sippy?

Too funny! I am surprised that people talk about bottles like that at DC! I mean, since 3 of us already said our kids can't use sippys, it must be pretty common to still be using a bottle by 1!  I love the visual of her tucking the sippy next to her too. It made me chuckle :)

  • Daycare can shove it.  They can wait until she gets the cup OR change the rule of no bottles.  DO NOT stress yourself out about this.

I agree with this. Don't stress. My mom works at a daycare.. I'll have to ask her about this .

Thanks!  Can you let me know what she says?  I am wondering what the whole deal behind wanting kids on sippy cups is.  Thank you!

I don't even have a kid in DC and I am curious! It seems so ridiculous to me, especially since they are in the child care business and should know that kids don't walk out of the womb using sippy cups.
