Baby food/cereal - what are you using? how often?

My dear mother and DH are pushing to feed LO cereal and start baby food soon and I'm torn onwhat to use. He want's to make it but I know he'll give up as soon as he realizes how much work it will take so in the mean while I want to stock up on some just in case! What are you using, how much and how often are you feeding LO with it? Did the bottle time get altered? First time momma here! TIA!

Re: Baby food/cereal - what are you using? how often?

  • Well first off I'd like to say that if you don't feel like you want to introduce your LO to solids just yet, don't do it! Right now, it's really more about practicing and getting baby used to different foods, but they don't necessarily need it.

My pedi said to start with rice cereal if LO was waking up more at night to eat. We didn't try spoon feeding yet but just adding 1-2 tbsp to the bottle. But my LO didn't handle rice cereal too well. She was very gassy. So last night I gave her oatmeal (single grain) for he first time. She did toot a bit throughout the night so we'll see how this goes. There is always a little adjustment period.

But from what I hear from other moms here, oatmeal is the way to go! I just got Gerber single grain oatmeal.

If you want to start spoon feeding right away I think you start with maybe a tbsp for a feeding, but don't quote me on it.

  • I just started giving oatmeal this week. I offer it to her twice a day, about an hour after one of her bottles in the morning and then an hour after her second to last evening bottle. She eats such a small amount that it doesn't affect her breastmilk consumption at all. She loves the oatmeal but wants to hold the spoon herself. I let her kind of slurp it up from the spoon and she makes a huge mess but that's part of it. The food is more for fun and learning new skills than for nutrition right now. Also, this may be a coincidence, but she started taking much longer naps in the morning since we started solids! Good luck.

This. Don't let people pressure you into feeding solids.

That said, my guy was ready. We skipped rice cereal because I tasted it and it was gross. The oatmeal was better, and why not just go to fruit and veggies?

Here's a great resource on the different foods as well as home made recipes:https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/

Right now E is eating about 1 1/2 Tbsp oatmeal or barley cereal and a heaping tsp. of fruit (pears, bananas or prunes) in the AM, then 1/2 small jar of veggies (squash, green beans, carrots, sweet potato, peas) and another small serving of fruits (previously mentioned) or avocado. He also enjoys a piece of apple or banana in the mesh feeder while I cook dinner.

I started with rice cereal but LO didn't really seem interested, so we are introducing banana this week, both pur?ed and in solid form through one of those baby net thingys.  Next week we will introduce sweet potato and so on and so forth to allow us little tummy to get used to all the new

But that being said, LO is definitely ready.  I wouldn't be starting if both LO and I weren't ready for it

  • Don't let them push you if you aren't ready!  My doctor gave us the go ahead to start "soon" at his last appointment.  She just said to start with cereal, and water it down with bm or formula if I want.  She was pretty vague on it.  I think we'll start with oatmeal after hearing that rice cereal can stop things up for babies - LO only poops every other day and has a lot of gas as it is.

We're moving next week, so I'm waiting until after that - I can only handle so many changes at once lol.

  • We didn't start until 6 months, ds is EBF so I can't answer about bottles.   He normally takes about 3-4 ounces of food a day.  He pretty much stays full on breastmilk so I don't force the solids much.

We completely skipped cereals and went straight for fruits and veggies.  We started with avocado and banana and he has had apple, pear, prunes, and butternut squash.   We try a new food out every 4 to 5 days if not a week, depending on the food.

I make his food.  I didn't with my first son because I thought it would be a hassle but I am glad I have tried it with him because I LOOOVE it!   I feel like I am in much more control of what he is getting in his food than if I bought something from the store.  I can cook and puree a bunch of food one afternoon, freeze it into one ounce portions and have enough food for several weeks.  It's really easy!

I do keep Sprout brand baby food on hand in case we need to be on the go and don't want to hassle with bringing homemade food.  Sprout is supposed to be pretty good about the quality of food they use and the processes in which it is made so that the food does not get cross-contaminated with other foods.  This is really big for me since my first son has food allergies and we want to make sure DS#2 doesn't get introduced to certain foods until he is a certain age.

  • We're experimenting with this (see my Baby Bullet post in 3-6 months)

We were on oatmeal, he does pretty good with it, but now we are mostly on fresh steamed sweet potatoes, bananas/avocados mixed, and bananas.  He HATED the jar food, and after I tried it I don't blame him!  We just got the Baby Bullet as a gift, and now he just loves his food so much, he can't get enough and gets really excited!!

He eats about 1/2 "bullet" (probably just over an ounce) of bananas or banana avocado in the morning, then 2 ounces of sweet potatoes at dinner.  He still nurses on the same schedule, and has 10oz /day of formula for top up.

  • If you do decide to make your own it is not that bad, make a big batch and it keeps in the freezer for 30 days.  I'm pretty lazy and I find it very easy (we don't have a dishwasher, but really, it's not that bad!)

  • We started with rice cereal at 4 months, but we gave it a rest after about a week because it constipated him.  We then tried squash, then green beans (for 3 days in a row each, at suppertime).  Then we reintroduced cereal at breakfast- but we added apples.  I make it like this- 1 or 2 tbsps cereal, 1 or 2 tbsps apples, and 1 or 2 tbsps breastmilk.  I just kind of vary the amounts until it looks about the right consistency.  Adding the apples to the cereal seems to make it not quite so constipating.

We have also given him carrots, peas and sweet potatoes.  He usually eats a whole 2.5 oz jar if it's something he likes (he didn't really care for peas).  I have bought either Gerber or Beech Nut.
