plus size maternity clothing???

I'm a true plus size woman and I've been having a HORRIBLE time finding maternity clothing.  I've tried about every store I can think of in my area.( I live in Nebraska)  Most stores don't sell maternity anymore and the few that due (and who say they have plus size) really only end up going to a size 18.

This is what I've tried so far:

shopko- no maternity

kmart- no maternity

Jcpenny- has limited maternity but is online only

walmart- has maternity online, but not plus size

old navy- only goes to size 18 or XL in maternity

motherhood- says they go to a size 3X but I think that ends up being about a size 22 at best (and personally I think  their clothes run short too)

Kohls- sells motherhood maternity, so same problem as above.

Target- only goes to a size 18 or XL in maternity

Dillards- no maternity

Von Maur- no maternity

Fashion Bug- no maternity

The Avenue- has VERY limited maternity items online but everything is on clearance so I think they are going to be ending the maternity line.

Womanwithin.com- online only and a bit pricey.  I was going to order 2 shirts and a pair of jeans but the total was $165....

Does anyone have any ideas???  I'd like to at least get a pair of jeans and a cute maternity top for pictures.Sad

  • I have done 100% Motherhood. Their sales can rock if you get there at the fit time.... GL!

  • The 3X at Motherhood is suppose to be 24, which was my pre pregnancy since (and pretty much where I am now, since I have only lost weight so far) and I find it to run a little big. I can't speak for the length of the pants, though, since I am 5'10 and EVERYTHNG from anywhere is always too short for me; I just have 2 pairs of capris from them and I love them.

Oddly I found a normal people maternity size XXL tank top/sleeveless shirt at Target and it fits me wonderfully. That was really unexpected given my size. I also have an XL maternity shirt from JCP that fits great as well, due to the cut of it. Those are actually my only two maternity shirts since that's all I can find; I did buy a couple more plain maternity tshirts, but so far I NEED the empire waist or something similar or else I just look even fatter than I already am. I probably won't be able to wear those other shirts for a while yet. I also have a 3X maternity shirt from JCP, which they advertise as a size 24 equivalent, and it's a bit too big and while the empire waist is created with a tie in the back, it ends up looking bad. It's another one I'll have to wait to wear.

I've found that a lot of plus maternity stuff is extremely unflattering. Instead of having an empire waist and flattering your figure, it's just a huge sheet of fabric that drapes over your boobs and flows down. No shape whatsoever. That's another reason why I haven't bought much, because I refuse to act like I am a shapeless blob.

  • I've found Motherhood to run large, actually, so give it a try.  You neve rknow.  You may also try eBay.  When it comes to tops, there seem to be a lot of plus-sized tops with empire waists that can easily double as a maternity top (I've gotten a few tops like that).

  • ON totally has XXL maternity clothes, at least in their tops. They have some cute tops, too!  For maternity jeans, I have little advice because I haven't taken the plunge and bought any yet....maybe buy cute tops on clearance at somewhere like Old Navy and then splurge a little more on the jeans?  Good luck!

  • I am not sure what size you need but I am normally a size 22 on bottom and I can wear either XXL(regular size) or 2x pants from Motherhood, so I would suggest at least try on a pair of pants there. I have a hard time with tops because I am not very busty for a woman of my size and plus size maternity manufacturers I think assume if you are larger that your boobs must be too. I have just bought normal tops in a larger size or size XL or XXL maternity tops that are stretchy. Also Walmart does have some cute plus size maternity tops. GL!

  • I totally feel your pain!! I've gotten my work pants, jeans, and denim shorts from motherhood and destination maternity. Destination maternity had a somewhat larger selection in the store. I've also ordered some dresses from JC Penny online. I recently ordered some more casual tops for summer from woman within. The good news is after one order they send you a boatload of coupons...so try ordering one item and then use the coupons they send for a larger purchase. I did that and it has made it more affordable. I also did hit some of my normal stores and found tops that would work in a size or two bigger. I'm so glad that I work for a school and won't have to worry about my appearance after a couple more weeks!! Then it will just be about 6 weeks when the school year starts that I will have to look somewhat decent...

  • I have looked at this site before as well, they have some cute basic stuff. I haven't ordered anything maternity from them but I have ordered regular clothes and they were good quality. They definitely aren't cheap but unfortunately we are at the mercy of what is available in our size.

I got all of my pants and capri's from Motherhood. I got my work tops there as well but when it came to tank tops and every day shirts I just went to Fashion Bug and bought a size bigger. They fit great and I should have no problem about them lasting the next 3 months.

  • Thanks for all your help ladies!  Right now I've been able to just wear my regular clothes but my shirts are getting to be to short and I did NOT want to be one of those pregnant women that walk around wearing their husbands t-shirts and sweat pants.  It stinks that its so hard for big beautiful women to find good, CUTE clothing.  I'll be sure to give motherhood another chance and maybe I'll take the plunge and order a couple things (and pray for lots of coupons).  I at least feel better and like I'm not alone in my quest for cute clothes that fit. Smile  Thanks again everyone!!

  • I just got fed up trying to find maternity clothes and am just buying larger sizes of regular clothes. I went to the thrift shop and picked up some pants in a couple sizes larger than my usual size. They're a little loose now, but my usual pants are too tight. I'm sure I'll grow into them just fine in the next several months. And since they were from a thrift shop, they were cheap enough that I don't have to mind that I won't be using them forever, and I can redonate them when I'm done.

  • UGH I feel your pain! I bought 2 items from sally anne that were from motherhood but got them home and of course they didn't fit :( They were XXL and frankly just too small..there were a few shirts from motherhood there as well but jeez did they ever look short and with my boobs it definately would have been a belly top!! Ewww!  When I'm not pregnant, I'm a 22/24, depends on the make of the clothing line but just not having any luck whatsoever. I've resorted to the old hair elastic keeping the button on my capris together lol I hate saying I don't care or give up but I honestly just don't have the money to be spending on matt clothes when we're starting to buy baby stuff. Its very frustrating, this is my 4th and final baby and I have the 2-belly thing going on too lmao baby belly is at my button now and then its pushed everything up into my diaphragm and its hard to breathe sometimes. I just keep telling myself this will be over soon and that lil face and body will be sooo worth it!!

  • Thanks ladies for all your help.  I wanted to share that I did finally find a few things at Motherhood.  If you guys are having issues I highly recommend trying their "super stretch boot cut jeans" and their "convertible pants".  They are both true to pre-pregnancy size and very comfortable.  Plus the convertible pants can go from regular length to carpi and are super cute and super soft.   I got everything but the jeans on sale- otherwise I would NOT have been able to get much at all.

Again keep up the hope ladies and bless you all for helping me keep mine.
