Planning homebirth...prepare for hospital?

Hey Ladies,

Just wondering... we're planning a home birth with our midwife should everything continue to go well and as expected, however, we are registered at the local hospital "just in case".

Should I prepare for the hospital by packing hospital bags and create a separate (hospital oriented) birth plan "just in case"? It stresses me out to even think about a hospital birth, but maybe it would be good to be prepared?

Any one else having a home birth? How are you approaching it?

  • I'm curious about this too. Plans don't always go as planned so I imagine it would be smart to have just in case.

  • I would.  But keep in mind that if you transfer, it's likely going to be because of a situation you'll have little control over anyway.

However, I think it's always a good idea to ensure that if plan A doesn't work out, plan B is still as good as it can be.

  • I am planning my first home birth (first birth was a hospital induction) and do plan to pack a small hospital bag.  My DH is scheduled to deploy about a month before my EDD so I won't really have anyone to run back to my house for things unless I  give a key to a friend or family member.

As far as a birth plan goes I figure if I'm transferring it will probably be for something serious (not necessarily an emergency) so I don't really plan to have one.  Plus I know my midwife and support person will be joining me at the hospital so I'm not so worried about that.

ETA: I just realized it might be helpful to have a birth plan anyway if there are post birth things you do or don't want for the baby (Vit K, Hep B, Eye Ointment, Skin to Skin, BFing, etc.)  It wouldn't hurt to have that written down in case there is chaos.

    This!

I had small bag with some clothes for H, LO and myself packed, just "in case," but other than that I didn't bother with anything else. GL and I hope you get to experience the joy of delivering your LO at home!

  • I didn't write a birth plan for the hospital. I actually didn't even pack a hospital bag until I went into labor. I was a huge procrastinator, but I didn't end up going to the hospital and had a uneventful labor and delivery.. just really really long.

  • good question - i was curious too! I guess it does make sense to have a small bag of the essentials just in case.

  • You have to do what makes you most comfortable. While laboring with DD for my HBAC I thought about at least packing a bag for baby but decided not to because I didn't want to acknowledge that possibility. She was 4 weeks early and we did decide to take her to the hospital after birth just to be cautious. My MW helped pack clothes and essentials for me and baby, it worked out fine. Hopefully you won't have deal with any of this.

  • Thank you all for your helpful responses!

Good point about transfer being off the blue prints anyway! I think i'll do a basic birth plan b for the hospital but keep that in mind.

My midwife will b with me should transfer occur.

  • I packed a small bag for the hospital with very basic essentials. We lived uber close to the hospital so my husband could go home if needed quickly. I registered at the hospital mostly because I had to go in for a rhogam shot and they did it at that time. I didn't have a hospital birth plan because I knew if I was going there everything would be out the window any way.

In the end I was transferred after the birth but my baby wasn't. It was very interesting. I was glad I had a small bag packed and preregistering really helped with all the confusion going on. It never hurts to be a little bit prepared for a transfer because you just never know.

  • When I had my little girl I packed a bag just in case, you never know what might happen.  Let's hope you don't need it!
