If you are looking to get her something special, I would stick to a blanket or cute little animal...something that she can have throughout her baby phase and beyond. I understand how you feel; I am very big on creating memories for the baby that when they are a little older, I can share things that how much we loved him/her before they were even born. (Obviously everyone loves their baby regardless of what they buy, but this is just what we are hoping to do.)
lol the first thing I bought was a onesie with my college logo on it.
Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way."

The first thing I got my LO was a "my first bear" teddy...I wanted it to be something she/he could have for always, and wouldn't grow out of a couple months later, or go out of style.
I still have my very first bear, so I figured it was a good shot...
The first thing I bought was a bib that says "My Dad Is Cooler Than Your Dad" and it was how I told DH we were pregnant.
We are planning on buying a 'birth present' for baby though. Probably get a stuffed animal that baby can grow up with. My brother and I each have a stuffed animal we got for our first Christmas and I would love to keep this tradition with my little boy.

I still have my first bear too and this is exactly what we are doing too!
My dad gave me a stuffed animal (a frog, which was/is his nickname for me) as my first present when I was born Doesn't necessarily have the be the first thing you buy, period. If you make it special it will be special, no matter when you buy it!
I actually found the "going home" outfit for a baby girl that I wanted at BRU when I was like 12 weeks pregnant. After we found out that she is a she, we went and bought in in two sizes

Look for a small, soft blankie or machine washable stuffed toy. Whatever it is, make sure it's small and MACHINE WASHABLE. Once you've picked out this "lovey", as they call it, sleep with it. Wear it around the house in your bra. Basically get your mama scent on it. Once baby is born start bringing the lovey everywhere baby goes. Very soon it will become a loving, soothing favourite. J's bunny is part of the family now and we never leave home without it. Doing this was the best parenting tip I ever got.
