Preemies

Just got back from our NICU Follow-Up

Our girls will be 6 months on the 22nd and just had their first NICU follow-up. Everything went well accept that they want us to do some Occupational Therapy Exercises with both the girls for some muscle development. We got the Lecture on Exersaucers as well. So I guess we'll no longer be using those...until they are standing on they're own atleast.

As far as growth Brynn at  5 1/2 months is 24 1/2 inches long and weighing 14 pounds 12 ounces.  Kendall is also 24 1/2 inches long and weighing 14 pounds 8 ounces! :)

We go back in 2 months to follow up on the OT stuff otherwise pretty happy over all w/ our growing munchkins!

Congrats on your great follow up! Just curious what is the exersaucer issue? DH and I were going to put ours together soon. Thanks!!

  • Until babies have their core muscles (ie,sitting on their own) you shouldn't let them stand. I think this is more important in preemies- so I have been told. When they don't have core muscle tone, they simple use brute strength to stand rather than leg muscles and this can hinder muscle tone and hip/leg development.

Interesting! Makes sense! Thanks so much for responding, our LO is still way to small for either but we were going to get it out in the month or so and set it up, looks like we can wait a while longer! Whew some of these baby toys are like trying to build something for NASA!!!! I will have to ask our ped what his view is at our next apt.  Thanks again, sorry to hijack your post!

This exactly. Especially for my girls who have some muscle compensating going one..it can make it even worse. They were very firm on this issue, so better safe than sorry.

  • Hi! I noticed you delivered about where I'm at and I'm on watch now with pre-e and was given the steroid shots so I think they will be here soon depending if my numbers go higher. I've been so worried about delivering this early and when I saw your girls I feel so much better, they are lovely! I just feel so bad that my body has this pre-e, but seeing your blog has given me hope.

I was so scared too, but honestly medicine is so advanced now they will be fine! My husband was also a 32 weeker..and is completely normal...(I beg to differ a little with him though!) ha. The NICU was scary and seemed like forever but all the stuff I stressed over in there I now realize wasn't that big of a deal and very common for preemies. Best of luck! Hopefully they'll hold out for you as long as possible!
