What counts as words?

At this age what counts as words? Just saying them, or understanding their meaning? DS says mom, mama, dada, dog, door, baby all very clearly. He's definitely working on some other ones like yay, no, cheers (thanks to DH lol), and me, DH and my mom swear he's trying to say you're welcome.

He definitely knows what dog means, sometimes I think he knows what door means, and I'm not really sure about mom and dada. I guess when my mom, or DH are on the phone, no matter who it is, he says mom, so maybe he does know? But does that actually matter at this point? Cause he definitely had no idea what a baby is, but can say it

Re: What counts as words?

  • We're about the same as you. He says mama, dada, uh-oh, stinky, pretty, thank you, baby? and bye. I haven't really had a moment where I think he says those with actual meaning. Mama and dada are said often but the others seem to be repeated after we say them.

  • To me, it's not a word unless they understand it and use it with meaning.  Otherwise it is just babble.
  • I don't know how I feel about it. I think if they can say the word it counts as I word I guess, but I also don't think I count it if it doesn't have meaning. So, I guess they have to know what it means for it to count for me.

  • When she says mama and dada she knows who it is. She also knows who the dogs are when she says their name. She also knows Kitty and says it when she sees my Mom's cats.

She totally copied DH and said Grandma the other day. I don't think she knew what it meant but how can you not count it when she clearly said the word Grandma? lol That's a hard one!

  • I don't have any thoughts on what counts as words because we are sort of the opposite. DD knows what many words mean but can't say much at all. She still hasn't said mama! But if I ask her "where is the duck?" or turtle or bunny or kitty or dog, she will get the toy or point to the animal (we have a cat and a dog). She knows what Legos and diapers are too. But she won't attempt to say any of these words except dog and diaper.
