Re: progesterone

  • There wasn't any negative side effects for me...I took them for four weeks. So I was more than happy to take them. I had the suppositories...which are a little annoying to insert, and just be sure to wear a panty liner to avoid any messes.

I'm not sure the progesterone prevents chromosomal issues, I thought it had more to do with the formation of the placenta...but I'm not a doctor and to be honest I didn't ask for a ton of details on it. So if someone can verify, please do so.

  • It is up to you, if you are uncomfortable with taking progesterone supplements, don't take them.  However, many women benefit from taking them during first tri and go on to have successful pregnancies with healthy babies.

I was trying to figure out how to word this as well.  As far as I am aware, low progesterone does not mean your baby has a chromosomal issue, it has more to do with sticking and growing (super technical terms, I know). Helping with formation of the placenta sounds right to me but I could be wrong.

  • I was prescribed vaginal suppository supplements from the day of my BFP to 12 weeks.  He never checked my progesterone levels, just gave me the script because of my loss history as a precautionary measure.  I just stopped using them on Wednesday. Many of us have taken supplements either orally or vaginally, and it seems to be pretty common.

Taking the supplement will not prevent a baby with a chromosomal abnormality from miscarrying, it will just give your body the time it needs to attempt to give the baby time to "stick" properly.

  • My levels are low as well and I take the suppositories. I hate them, but I want a healthy baby so I continue. The most annoying thing is what gets left behind..... Yuck. But, like everyone said, if this will keep my baby sticky, then I do it.

  • I've taken progesterone during each of my pregnancies.  Both of my boys were fine.  We didn't take my progesterone levels this time around yet, but my OB put me on it as a precaution seeing as how I took it during the last two pregnancies.  I take the oral form, Prometrium, 200mg 1x/day.  I also take it at night because it makes you sleepy (or can).

If your OB tells you to take it, do it.  Yes

  • I am taking progesterone supplements right now. My levels weren't rising as fast as they should have been, but since I've been taking them (about 2-3 weeks now?) my doctor said my levels look great. I was upset when she called and told me my levels were low, and I asked her if that meant that something had happened or was going to. She said absolutely not, and that some women just don't produce enough on their own.
