1st Trimester

When did you hear the HB on doppler?

I went for my second appointment today, and at our last one she told us we would hear the HB next time. Today she told me I measured two days behind on the u/s so my due date is actually the 16, not the 14, but she's not changing it in case she has to induce me. She said since the baby is still behind my pelvic bone it would be hard to hear and she didn't want me to worry if we didn't find it. I don't really see what difference two days makes, and I'm still worried. I have to wait another 4 weeks now. But, she said my labs look great and my blood pressure was great, so I'm trying to look on the bright side.

When was the earliest you heard the HB on doppler?

ETA: First u/s was at 6 weeks and somedays and we did hear the HB then. I just want to hear it again to know everything is okay.

Re: When did you hear the HB on doppler?

  • If you saw the heartbeat on the ultrasound, why are you worried about not hearing it on the doppler? I think 10 weeks is the earliest they can pick it up with doppler and most doctors don't even try until 12 weeks to prevent unnecessary worry.

  • I didn't get to hear ours until 12 weeks. Even then, doc was like don't be surprised if it takes a little bit to find because the uterus wall is still thicker..We heard it right away, but it was 12 weeks nonetheless :)

  • It's still much too soon with this one, but with DD I was 10w4d when they picked it up on a doppler.  BUT I do remember my OB saying before she tried that if the doppler didn't pick it up then, there was no need to worry because it is still pretty faint at that point. I was told today that with this pregnancy they will try to pick it up at 11 weeks. My sister who is also expecting didn't hear hers until 16 weeks, so I think it really just depends on the doctor and what they prefer. If the ultrasound could pick up your LO's heartbeat then they should've been able to tell you the heart rate, which is just as good as hearing it on a doppler.

Because I keep hearing about missed miscarriages, and I have basically no symptoms, so I still want to know that it's in there.

So was the u/s done on a previous day? I read it like you had a u/s today. That makes more sense.

My doctor will only try to pick up a heartbeat with the doppler at 12+ weeks.

My OB sees expectant mommies at 8 weeks and then 12 weeks, but if I was there at 10 weeks for some reason, I would want her to try to hear the heartbeat. I've read some posts where girls find it between 9 and 10 weeks on their at home dopplers.

  • We heard and seen the HB at 6 weeks 4 days. Everybody's pregnancies are different, so I wouldn't be worried. If the baby is in a weird position it is harder. I have a tilted uterus so it makes things a little more difficult to find. It also depends on the equipment and experience at your docs. Some offices can't hear the HB until 12 weeks. Just try not to stress too much.

You heard it on a doppler that early? Or a u/s?

Oh, ok! Now I understand. I thought the ultrasound was the same day. Like I said before, I know it's hard not to worry, but you still are on the early end of being able to hear it. If you don't want to wait 4 weeks to hear it, you can order a home doppler to try out over the next few weeks.

She told me not to because they aren't as good as the ones the office has, but it seems like a lot of people hear theirs early. I don't think I can wait another 4 weeks so I might have to rent one.

  • My OB found the baby's heartbeat on a Doppler at my 11 week appointment which was the first time we had ever tried with a Doppler.

My sister was able to find it at home with our Doppler at 14w2 and my OB found it again at my appointment at 14w3d :)

  • I'm a pretty slender person and didn't hear hb on a Doppler until 11 1/2 weeks with DS or this baby. I tried sooner with no luck. I had an appt at 10 1/2 weeks and my dr didn't even try the Doppler, he went straight to the u/s. that's a bummer your dr would not do an u/s for you today. I would buy a Doppler online. Totally worth the money for the peace of mind. If you can't hear it now, you would be able to very soon.

I found my DD's heartbeat at 9 weeks (with a sonoline B) but I'm pretty thin. I have no idea if that makes a difference. It also helps to do it when you have a full bladder - I mean about to p!ss yourself full.

  • at my 10 week appt. Then i bought a doppler and have heard it a few times sinces

  • I'll be 10 weeks 3 days at my next appointment and we were really hoping to hear it then. I called and the nurse said my OB usually tries to hear the h/b anywhere between 11 and 13 weeks. So, I may be too early and I'm not sure he'll even try. I really want to see my bean though, therefore, I'm not sure I'd be able to wait another 4 weeks either.

Honestly, while we originally planned to opt out for the NT scan, if I have to wait even longer to see/hear the h/b, then we may change our my minds. Regardless of the results, we'd keep the baby and we wouldn't do any further testing, so we originally found it pointless. I guess we'll just see what happens next week.

Out of curiousity, is there a medical reason already that causes her to suspect she'd need to induce??  That seems like a very odd statement for a dr to make.

No, I'm young and healthy and this is my first pregnancy. I think it was sort of a "just in case" thing. I'm not really even far enough along yet to know anything is wrong.

I see.  The reason that I ask is that in most cases there is absolutely no reason to induce... however... there is an alarming trend of dr's "offering" or "suggesting" to induce for non-medical reasons.  It's really something that you'll probably read/hear more about when you're into the 3rd tri.

I have heard about that and read a lot about unnecessary inductions. As long as I can remember my mom told me never get induced or take pitocin because she had that my brother and his labor was a lot worse than mine. She is a MW and not an OB so I'm hoping she's not so medical intervention-y.  I definitely don't plan to have one unless it's really necessary, and when she mentioned it she said hopefully I wouldn't need it.

  • I went last Friday to get a pregnancy test done and the doctor sent me to get ultra sound dating done. I was 11 weeks 5 days. The tech gave me pictures and let me hear the heartbeat. I was not expecting any of that.
  • With my first pregnancy, I heard it at 9w3d with my home doppler, but that took some pretty ridiculous gymnastics to find it. I was not thin at that time.

With my second pregnancy, I couldn't find it at 10w and I figured something was wrong. I miscarried at 12w.

I got to hear the heartbeat on the dobbler this week at 12w3d, but that's just because i only go to the Dr.'s every 4 weeks. But they did tell me the heartbeat was very strong!
