How do you back up pictures?

So my computer is giving indications it may poop out on me soon so I'm panicking about how to back up my pictures. I've just been putting it off because I don't know what the best option is. We have an external hard drive, but it's like 5 years old so don't know if that's a good options. CDs? Somewhere on a cloud?

What have you found to be best?

 Thanks!!!

  • I keep all of my pictures on an external harddrive. I plan to also make CD back-ups, and print copies of my favs but haven't gotten around to either of those yet.

  • I've been worrying about my computer, too, so I've been trying to figure out a decent option.  I don't know what the best option is, but my take on an external hard drive is that that can die too, so I'm wary of those as well.

I haven't found a service I'm ready to actually pay for in terms of cloud storage so I've been using Shutterfly.  Shutterfly has free unlimited storage, and you can get archive DVDs of your photos from them as well.  I'm sure you could do your own CDs as well, but I'm lazy like that, so I'm just doing it this way for a quick solution.  I'm not saying that Shutterfly is definitely the way to go, but for me it's been an easy and cheap way to at least get my photos somewhere before the computer dies.

  • First we copy them to a jump drive. Then we put each other's photos on each other's computer. Then back up our computers on the external hard drive. The jump drive is stored in our fire safe. I would like one more jump drive and store it at my husband's parents' home.

  • We have an external hard drive... which reminds me, I should back up everything on there again soon! In the past I have found burning CDs to be a pain to make and store, but if you're organized I'm sure that's a fine option too!

My computer died a while back and thankfully, the hard drive was intact and we were able to get everything off of it with some kind of hard drive reader/usb device.

Awesome! We already use Shutterfly for ordering prints/gifts/etc I just wasn't aware they would do the DVDs too. I'll definitely be going that route too!

I'm also trying to start doing a book for each calendar year for our family through Shutterfly too so it won't be by birthday which will get a little confusing when there are more kiddos. It's so hard to narrow down pics though so I may have to do by season while we have young kiddies!

I have them all on USB flash drives.  I used to do CDs but the drives hold more and are much sturdier.
