Storing pump parts?

I am going back to work soon and I will need to pump 3 times a day.  The only sink is in a very public area and I don't really want to clean a bunch of pump parts with people watching.  Is there a way I can store the parts so I don't have to wash them until I go home for the evening?  I have a Medela PISA if that matters.

Re: Storing pump parts?

  • I kept mine in a ziplock bag in the fridge and washed at the end of the day.  If you aren't going to wash right away you do need to keep them cold to avoid bacteria growth.

  • I was going to ask this too! I thought about taking a small cooler with me with several ice packs to store milk and parts until I get home. Would that be okay?

This is what I did.  I kept everything in the little fridge in the nursing room.  If you have to use a public fridge and want to be more discreet, then I'd get a small wet bag or something that you can't see through.

In a pinch (like if I was at a meeting and didn't have access to a fridge or sink), I would use the Medela pump wipes.  They're kind of pricey to use all the time, but perfect for that kind of situation.

I found that my ice packs never made it through the day, I had to refreeze them.  But maybe with a really great cooler it could work, I used the Ameda one that came with my pump.

Do you use a new ziplock bag everyday or can you wash and reuse it for the week or something?

  • I store mine in the fridge, too, but the other thing I do is before pumping, I go to the kitchen and get a cup of water.  When done pumping, I pull out the trash can and then "rinse" the parts with the water using the trash can to catch the water.

I used gallon-sized Ziplock bags... I just washed them out each night.  Seemed less wasteful!

  • I use an insulated lunch bag, put my milk bags in there and the pump parts.  Then I put that in the fridge in the mom's room.   I wash the pump parts at home and wipe clean the lunch bag.

  • I did the ice packs.  I had one cooler with 12 hour packs for my milk and one with regular blue ice packs for my parts.  They always stayed cold 8-9 hours.  If I forgot to freeze them the night before, I'd just toss both bags into the the fridge.

    Same here.

  • I did as others and stored the parts in cooler or fridge.

I also used the Medela wipes fairly often.  Since I pumped for 11 months, we saved a ton of money on formula, so I figured a little splurge for convenience was no big deal :)
