Need advice, what kind of gift?

DH just got home and told me we are invited to his coworker's house tomorrow afternoon for a BBQ. (They are French if that matters)

What would you bring as a small gift? Wine, flowers/plant, I am at a loss...

This is my first time meeting DH's coworkers (apparently the whole office will be there)

A bottle of wine is a solid hostess gift.

Agreed...it is usually what I bring or we get when we host something :)

  • Wine is always popular but if I am really at a loss and somewhere new, I like to go to "mom and pop" shop and ask for any good tips. Sometimes they have really local unique ideas.

  • If you do flowers I know you have to be particular about the color and type in Europe (everything has meaning and you don't want to give the wrong message).
  • A bottle of wine is perfect.  If you really want to get creative and have time (wait, what's that?), you can make some Sangria and bring it over.

I know!! I have a book that DH's company gave us on Scottish culture and customs, but the people whose house we are going to are French, so I was confused, lol. I think I'm going to play it safe and go with wine, but thank you :)

Looks like wine it is, when I ran out to the corner store I went past a small gift shop that sold those wine bags so I got that and I will pick up a bottle tomorrow...now to choose a bottle...

Thanks again for the help :)

  • wine is a great idea...however its my understanding (my my aunt who has been to france many times as she is from Italy and that area) that the french are snobs about their wine. So I would normally say yes wine, but in this case maybe not? I just wouldnt want them to get offended as a nice gesture, ya know.

With that being said... what to bring... maybe a nice potted plant? or some homemade brownies or idk something like that mabye?

ETA: I should have read this, I see you already went out and got some wine. I had no idea they were nutos about the color of flowers too. Different cultures...

    I hope you have fun!

I used to think this. However, what if they aren't drinkers? My in-laws don't drink and are actually very against alcohol. If they received wine as a gift it would not only be extremely awkward for the gift giver, but it would offend them as well.

I try to stick to flowers or something neutral like that.

  • I'm a little late, but I always bring a plant or a high end beeswax candle unless I know their wine taste. Flowers take up time for a hostess to arrange them and put out and wine, as pp said, may not be up their alley...

    Just my $0.02 cents

I'm from a beekeeping family - love the beeswax candle idea!!!!

I wouldn't do the Wine on the one chance you end up with someone who is involved in AA or they don't drink. That would be a bigger etiquette faux pas than not showing up with anything...
