baby boy name question

I have asked this on the baby name board already, but also wanted to ask you ladies.

My DH, for the longest time (even before pregnant), will only agree to 2 boy names (he is picky): Thomas and Oliver. :) This is fine because I love both. Thomas is actually my maiden name, so would love to include that in my son's name, whether it be his first or middle name. The problem is we can't decide which we like better for the first name.

I know a lot of ladies on the bump seem to either really like Oliver or are very over it due to rising popularity. I see that it is popular on the internet, but I personally have never met an Oliver in real life (and I work with all ages...babies through geriatrics). I live in the south, so maybe it is just not common here. I like Oliver because it's a classic, yet sounds quirky to me, which I like. My first question is, do you ladies find that it is overused or do you think it has the potential to shoot up in popularity soon? For a boy, I'd like a name that's not unusual, but also don't want him to be one of many in a classroom.

Thomas, of course, is a classic name, but one that I don't find many babies/young kids named. I love the name and would love it as a first name, but maybe since it was my last name for 28 years, I'm not drawn to it as much as Oliver (which seems new/fresh to me vs. Thomas) if that makes sense. On the other hand, maybe I should go with something that I have always known and liked.

Second question, which would you prefer as the first name/middle name combo?: Thomas Oliver or Oliver Thomas

Oliver Thomas seems to flow a bit better, IMO. But either way is great.

    I agree with the PP.

My husband's favorite name at the moment is Oliver.  If I can get around the horribleness of someone one day calling my son Ollie, I might go for it. I can't come up with any better nicknames, which makes me hesitant.

Either TO or OT has a good flow to me. That's great you've got it narrowed down already!

    Yes
  • I love Thomas Oliver!!  I am a huge family name fanatic though.

Oliver is a perfectly fine name, but it is fairly popular in my ciricle of friends.  So, I wouldn't use it for that reason. So really, Thomas sounds fresher to me than Oliver at this point!

Question, would you want to save whatever name you don't use for a potential second little boy?

:) See I actually like Ollie okay as a nickname for a small child, but don't think I would like Tommy, if he were named Thomas. Either way, I prefer the whole name versus the nicknames for both of these names and would try to deter anyone from using those nicknames.

Good question. Before this pregnancy, the answer would have been yes because we were planning on two kids. But this has been a really tough pregnancy and any other pregnancies would continue to be high risk (like this one)....so I'm thinking we might be one and done! :)

  • I like Thomas Oliver :-)
  • I think you could go with "Thomas Oliver" or "Oliver Thomas".  Either would work.  I personally like "Oliver Thomas" better.
  • I think either way will be great. I love both, I love Thomas because it is your maiden name.

  • Based on the people I know, Oliver is much less common than Thomas. I think Oliver Thomas sounds nice.

With Thomas Oliver all I can think of is my favorite "tomolive martini" (https://www.oldsouth.com/products.asp?id=94&topcat=1)... not that it's a bad thing :o

I like Oliver Thomas better. I'm in Ohio and have worked in preschools for the last 8 years and can tell you that I have never had an Oliver or a Thomas come into the school.
