How many oz of BM should I plan for with a 1 month old?

I EBF, but have to be away from LO two days next week - - about 8 hours each day - - and DH will be watching LO and giving bottles of pumped milk.

How much BM should I anticipate needing?  HOw much should he plan on giving per bottle?  TIA!

One beautiful toddler and one beautiful baby.

  • I pump and bottle feed every 3 to 4 hours during the day, my lo takes anywhere from 80-120ml, so around 3 oz each time.  Not sure if that is normal though... And I would definitely pack a whole bunch of extra if it were me, just in case...

  • I try to give my LO at least one bottle of pumped milk a day. The bottle has 3 oz, but there has been a few times when I had to breastfeed her right after she finished the bottle because she was still hungry. She will be 1 month in 3 days.
  • My daughter is 5 weeks today and I exclusively pump. She takes about 4 oz of pumped breast milk every 2 hours. Sometimes less, sometimes up to 5 oz. I had to leave my LO for a wedding and my DH stayed home with her as well. I had a couple extra bottles and also had some formula on hand, just in case for some reason she ran out!

thanks everyone.  good tip about leaving some formula as a last resort, just in case.

Same as this..my son eats 4oz breastmilk every 2 hrs..I start with 3oz but he always gets mad after and wants the 4th oz...I also keep formula on hand to supplement

  • DD is a little older, but when at daycare for 8 1/2 hours, she eats four 4 oz bottles. She likes to eat about every 2 to 2.5 hours though.
  • If she's been ebf she will probably take less than the babies pp are talking about who are used to bottles.  I'd start with 2oz bottles and then offer more if lo acts hungry after a good burping session.  You don't want to make a four oz bottle and waste bm.   Kellymom.com has great info on how much and how to bottle feed ebf babies.

  • Dh just started doing one night feeding and my one month old was happy with 2.5 oz both times... He eats about every 2 hours.

My dd was 9 weeks early and I have EP with her, due to the rigorous pumping they had me on and my already large breast size (lucky me, heavy scarcasm!) dd is now having trouble latching, so I just pump and bottle feed her. A good rule of thumb my LC and some nurses told me in the NICU was for every pound LO is multiply that by 2.5 ounces. That is the total ounces per day LO should get, then you can divide by about how many times you BF per day to break down how many ounces per feeding. I hope I wrote that to make sense!!

Example: DD is 8.4 pounds so...

    8.4*2.5= 21 ounces (rounded)

DD takes 7 bottles on a typical day *knocks on wood* she has been sleeping 8 hours a night, so 3 ounce bottles. Its pretty accurate for her she does anywhere from 2.5 to 3 ounces.

I know all babies are different some eat more or less but hopefully that's a little guideline you can try! Good luck!

  • My LO takes 1-2 bottles a week.  She eats 6 times a day (has for about 2 weeks) and will take between 3.5-5 oz at a time.

If she doesn't finish a bottle the first time, I have heard it is acceptable and I will do it, to finish the bottle at the next feeding, just put it in the fridge.

  • Breastfed babies don't usually take a set amount at each feeding, so remind your husband that she may not take the entire thing at one sitting but may want more later.

At 1 month, Viv was taking between 2.5 and 3 ounces per feeding.  She's at 3.5 - 4 now.  She also wanted to eat between 2.5 and 3 hours.  But she's also fed exclusively via bottle, so . . .

This -- the 2 or 3 times I've given her a bottle, it has been around 2.5 - 3 ounces.
