Moms of toddlers or older-hitting?

So how to you deal with hitting?  When DS gets frustrated, usually when we tell him he can't do something or have something, he will hit or kick.  We've tried a few things, TO and talking to him and just ignorning it, but I'm curious if you all have any other suggestions on how to deal?

    We do a combo of things...say hitting hurts, hands are for clapping,, hugging, and playing but not hitting, hold his arms if he continues  to hit, tell him he can hit a pillow, or give hi words to use I stead like I know your frustrated bc you want to do this but hitting is not okay...  Depends on our situation what we use...hope this makes sense I. On my iPad....
