So we've been starting a new food every 3-4 days- everything's gone well with oatmeal, sweet potatoes, pears and green beans (not her favorite, but she tolerated them). So Sunday, we started bananas. She loved them and at the entire 2 oz serving both Sunday and Monday. I was trying to be cautious since I'd heard from others that bananas caused constipation for their babies.
Apparently this magical fruit has the OPPOSITE effect on my daughter. She's been pooping 6-7 times a day and overnight (which she never does). My daughter, who I've only had to put diaper cream on maybe 4 times since she was born has THE WORST DIAPER RASH EVER! She's so red and irritated that I can barely wipe her because she is screaming in pain. It's bad enough that I stopped solids completely after her feeding on Monday and three days later she's still pooping like crazy and it's making it hard for the area to heal.
I feel horrible... all because of stupid bananas. Is there something else I should be doing to help her?

Re: Bananas are evil...
Who knows if it's really the bananas. DS has diarrhea since 6-ish weeks now (green/orange slimey poop about 5-8 times a day). We have had his stool tested and it came back normal and I went dairy free for 2 weeks without success for him. It started before we even started to give him real food. He finally seems to be slowing down and we believe it was just his digestive system maturing/changing.
I hope DD feels better soon! We used papertowels with water instead of wipes for the rash and actually some Monistat and Lotrimin, too, since it was first yeasty and then fungal.
I've got a SEVERE intollerance (mild allergy symptoms also) to bananas - from what you said, it sounds like that's the culprit... I wouldn't give up on all solids, but just take a couple steps back while things clear out.
I would use Triple Paste on the rash, but a bath and as much "air time" as possible should help with it as well...
Between solids and teething DS has become a pooping machine. He's in a "rabbit turd" phase so haven't had any real worries, but yiesch, it was nice doing the once a day or every other day reliably, now it's every single diaper and he's going through twice as many... Teething causes more saliva to be swallowed thus loosening the bowels up a bit...
It might not be the bananas, it could be something else. I'd give it a few days and then maybe try it again. My LO loves his bananas!

I read somewhere (so it must be true haha), that the riper the bananas are, the more laxative effect they have.
My scientific research for that: My mom always complains that bananas make her super regular and she always eats ripe bananas. I prefer greener/more firm bananas, and I never have an issue.
(Now I'm published, so now it's citable for others... )

Unfortunately we're not making our own purees, so this is good ol' Gerber so I can't guess. Though I'm like you in eating the greener ones and have never had issues, so I'm on board with your scientific research
