Heart murmur...anyone else?

My DD had her 1 month check up yesterday. Everything looked fine except that the doctor noticed a heart murmur and wants her to get checked by a pediatric cardiologist. He explained how common heart murmurs are and told us not to worry. He rated the murmur a 3 on a scale of 1-6 (1 being the least problematic).

I know that I shouldn't be worried but I can't help but to think that my LO might have a health issue. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any insight would be helpful. TIA.

Re: Heart murmur...anyone else?

  • My LO has a heart murmur too.  It was found before we left the hospital.  We already went to the pediatric cardiologist who confirmed it.  He believes it may close on it's own over time and to be on the safe side we are following up with another appt in August.  We are concerned as well, naturally, but hoping for the best.  No one wants to hear their LO has a health issue.

  • My friend who's little guy is 6 wks old than dd has one. She was told te same thing, that it will likely correct itself but that they would keep an eye on it and proceed as needed. She couldn't help but be worried also. No one wants to hear that anything is wrong with LO, hang in there mama!

  • Ds2 had one that was found before we left the hospital and it had corrected itself by his 1 month appt.  They told me that most murmurs would correct themselves over time.

  • Not LO, but I've had one since childhood and it's 'innocent' - just the blood making a funny sound as it goes through the heart.

I hope that all works out for you!

This is what happened with us. I hope it turns out to be no big deal for you also.

  • My LO's had one . The pediatrician informed us of it before we left the hospital. He also told us not to worry and like all pp it would correct itself.

     Try to say positive :)

  • my brother was diagnosed with heart murmurs. He is now 23 years old, and in the army. Never had any problems due to this condition.

Same here, it's never had an adverse effect on my life except for dentists sometimes panic about it. My doctor says mine is minor enough that I don't need to tell the dentist anymore.

  • Thanks mommies. I know I shouldn't have anything to worry about. But I can't wait until Monday to have the doctor tell me that everything will be okay.
