3rd Trimester

Mitral Valve Prolapse and Labor

I have mitral valve prolapse and I'm worried about the condition on my heart during labor. I've talked to multiple doctors about whether or not I should get an epi and I'm getting mixed answers. I've also hired a labor doula to help me through and reduce the strain on my heart. Does anyone else have MVP? What was your labor and birth like?

Re: Mitral Valve Prolapse and Labor

  • How bad is your MVP? Have you had an echo during pregnancy or seen a cardiologist? A lot of women have MV prolapse or regurgitation. I have moderate tricuspid (right side of heart) regurgitation and have seen the cardiologist and had an echo and talked about it with my OB. The consensus was that the only thing that they will do differently is give a dose of IV antibiotics before and after delivery and try not to give me too fast a rate of IV fluids. The antibiotics will prevent any bacteria from infecting your weakened valve. I was also told that getting an epi shouldnt be a big deal, just let anesthesia know so they can adjust meds accordingly. The cardiologist and OB both mentioned that the biggest worry is if you have aortic valve stenosis and are pregnant. AVR can cause heart failure in anyone, but especially pregnant women bc of all the extra fluid in your vascular system.Ask your doctor definitely.

  • I  have a MVP and it hasn't even really been mentioned my entire pregnancy.  I did have an echo around a year ago and got the go ahead from my cardiologist that I should have no problems with a pregnancy.  I guess it all depends on how severe your MVP is.

  • My mom has it. She birthed three kids, all with an epidural. The MVP caused no issues with any of her births.

In fact, her first two births were pretty "easy". Her last was a bit more complicated, but that's because the epidural caused a horrible spinal headache (had nothing to do with the MVP), and because she had some issues with her cervix (due to the doctor finding pre-cancerous cells, which ended up needing a cone biopsy, before she got pregnant with my youngest brother).

  • I have MVP, I was monitored at one point during my first pregnancy but all the tests came out peachy and it wasn't a problem at all.

I had a C/S with spinal with my first and a natural VBAC with my second and there were no issues with either birth.
