Heat and GD

Hello - I'm a lurker but I'm hoping you can help...

I have diet controlled GD and am 36 weeks, 4 days.  Last week my numbers were perfect (fasting in the 80s, after meals around 100ish).  Today my fasting was 99,after breakfast was 119 and after dinner was just 130. I've never had a number that high before.  Lunch was under 100 (all at 2 hr).  It is really really hot here and we don't  have AC (but I did at work at lunch time).  Could that cause the increases?

(dinner had 30g of carbs, per my diet, and we went on a short walk after)

 Thank you!

Re: Heat and GD

  • I noticed something similar this week and attributed it to not drinking more water to compensate for the super hot temperatures.  Try to up your water intake and see if that helps.

I also just have off days once in a while - so you might have just been having one!

  • I noticed the same thing.  I did a little research on line and it said that the meter/strips can also be effected by the heat.

  • I'm t1 diabetic and have been since I was four. First off, you're doing phenomenal! To be 36w and still perfectly diet controlled with those numbers is amazing! If I read what you said correctly, these test results are all 2 hrs after you eat? If that is true, 130 is a bit high but it's actually still within range (130 and lower is recommended 2 hrs after a meal, 140 if 1 hr after a meal). If anything, heat causes sweat which causes you to burn your carbs so normally heat causes your numbers to go lower. However, the heat could cause you to become either more lazy or less wanting to be active which could correlate to higher numbers. Meters and test strips don't do so well in exposed heat but being in a room with no A/C won't affect them to the point of mis-reading. I grew up in Florida all my life and am now currently in San Diego and I've never had a problem with a meter due to it being in a hot room. HOWEVER, if you leave your meter in your purse, in a car, that could drastically change the results. Most meters created nowadays have a nifty sensor inside it, reading the internal temperature. If the pump is too hot for a proper reading it usually displays an error saying "internal temperature too hot, allow system to cool down and try again" - or something like that. I wouldn't worry about a 130 number (it's not a terrible number) but I would probably test a few more times around dinner (maybe 1hr, 2hr, and 3hr) just to ensure that the number is getting down. If the number after 2hrs is higher than 130, it can be a cause for concern such as you need to further limit your intake of carbs or more exercise. HTH!

  • Thanks everyone.  My activity level is higher than it has been, but was a little lower in the heat - not enough to explain everything though.  The midwife thought it might be a fluke and to wait it out through the cooler weekend.  Fasting today was 89 and so far my meals both today and yesterday have been under 120 at 2hours (although not as good as before the heat wave).

I'm 37 weeks tomorrow, so hopefully things will return to a level such that I can remain diet controlled until the baby gets here!

     Thanks again!
