December 2011 Moms

How does your garden grow?

Any Dec. moms doing any gardening? What are you growing?

We had great success with container gardening last year and are doing the same this year. We will be building a patio this summer and it has a garden incorporated into the design for future years.

This year we are growing beets, carrots, spinach, herbs, mojito mint, tomatoes, strawberries, peppers (bell and hot), and leeks. I cannot wait to prep soup for our daughter using the foods we've grown for our family! Our beets are nearly ready to harvest. If all goes well we should be able to get three beets harvests.

Re: How does your garden grow?

  • We have to grow inside because the flucking neighbor kids destroyed our outdoor plants (the ones who think its funny to break in).

We are growing green onions, radishes, Strawberries, and carrots. Nothing else is working in our random indoor planters.

  • I wish! The past few years I have had a garden but was afraid to plant anything this year and it get neglected. So strawberries are it for this year.

  • We had a garden well before baby, and I managed to kill most of it! Embarrassed  So as to not waste money and me kill the plants, we opted for one tomato plant in a container on our deck.  It's doing really well so far and we've already gotten 4 or 5 tomatoes from it! Hello BLT's  Big Smile

  • I've got a flower garden. Had a few flowers in it, but it's been really hot, so everything nut the roses and hibiscus have all died. DD loves being outside, so I hold her and go out and water and tend to the flowers.

  • I have basil growing inside and DH has green beans, tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, lettuce, onion, garlic, watermelon, cantaloupe and strawberries growing outside. Smile I am so excited about having fresh veggies and fruits right at our fingertips. My dad also has a huge garden. He supplies us with enough potatoes to last almost the entire year.

  • I am just starting out this year and have some containers with herbs (basil, cilatro, parsley, chives and oregano). I also have some cosmos growing that are just about to bloom.

We're redoing our yard right now so I'm planning to pick up some daylillies at a farm nearby to plant and a few other perennials.

Next year I can't wait to plant some flowers and veggies in the yard!

We have a English garden here that is filled with really pretty roses, poppies, and a whole bunch of other flowers whose names I do not know...

Once we get more settled, I have a lot of gardening to do. Right now, my biggest concern is stopping our dog, Max, from peeing on the flowers every time I take him out!

  • I had a pretty extensive container garden last year, but this year I decided to take it easy.  First - I don't know if or when we are going to move, second - it was a total PITA to clean it up at the end of the season last year. (second floor apt with a large deck).  This year I have 2 cherry tomato plants, 2 pepper plants, herbs (basil, thyme, mint, oregano, rosemary) and a bunch of large flower containers.  It's nice this year bc there is room to sit on the deck and enjoy the flowers.
  • We moved into this house at the end of last summer, so we haven't built a raised bed yet, but my husband did build me a huge cedar planter this spring.

We have tomatoes, broccoli, peas, sunflowers, zucchini, butternut squash, rosemary, mint, strawberries, lettuce and mixed greens.

We are also discovering our house has raspberries, as well as cherries, and pears. Blackberries, too, but we could do without those!

  • We're growing sweet corn, peas, pole beans, bush beans, cukes, carrots, lettuce, bell peppers, radishes, tomatoes, tomatillos and hot peppers in the garden. Cherry tomatoes and herbs in containers on the deck. The deer ate the tops off my corn (I live in a zone 4 so the corn is still small) so we'll see if it keeps growing or not. Dirty buggers.
