I personally think baby name books are a waste, especially the ones that have 100,000 names in them. You know right off the bat that about 99,950 of those are ones you would never consider in a million years.
I find websites and forums like BNB, Nameberry and Nymbler to be good starting places for brainstorming. I'm not a fan of digging through our family tree for our children's names (there's a lot of repetition so lots of Mikes, Bobs, Johns, etc and nothing very exciting) but I think it's nice when others do it for theirs.
With my first I used websites, I had a baby name book... I ended up hearing his name on a TV show or movie and fell in love. You never know where a name will come from!
His middle name is a family name. I knew my first son (if I had one) would have the middle name Peter after my grandfather when he died. We were very close.

I found an excel spreadsheet from someone on the nest. It listed all of the baby names registered in the US last year in order of popularity. We have found this very helpful. We know we do not want very popular names (having had a very popular name as a child) or anything that is "unik" This also allowed us to scan all of the names quickly and indivudally highlight the ones we were both interested in so we can review it together later on.
I don't recall where I got it from, but maybe someone else can tell you.
we used a baby book to find the first name, and used family for the middle name. That way a part of each of our families is carried on in our children, and we can tell them about where it came from. Plus it was really emotional when our parents came to the hospital to see that baby, and we then told them the name (our daughters middle name is my Moms name, and our Son's middle name is my Father In Law's name). They each got teary eyed knowing their name was being carried on in their grandchild
I'm planning on using a regular old name that I happen to like as the first name and a family name(s) for their middle name(s). For instance, even though it's still super early, my husband and I have decided on Myles for a boy, it means soldier and we're both soldiers in the ARNG and both have a bunch of friends and family serving also so it means something to us. We haven't decided on a male middle name yet though, that's the tough part =p For a little girl, we're thinking Emma or Ainsley and I'm personally thinking Rebecca or Chelsea for the middle names cause those are my sister's names :]

Traditionally on my husband's side, the father's middle name is the son's first name. It has been this way for three generations and we plan on keeping the tradition. If it's a girl, we are flipping through names on the internet.

This for us. We heard a name we liked on a TV show and that was that lol.

We wanted to name after family, but my husband and I don't agree on which family members to name after so for a girl, I downloaded an app, highlighted about 100 names, had my husband cross off the definite no's and we have about 15-20 now to choose from. I didn't go through boy names because I will not consider naming a boy anything but my father's name, since he died when I was very young. My husband will just have to deal!
We are lucky in that we have both unique and traditional names in our family tree that we really like. That said, if we didn't have great names in our family, we would be using the baby name books.
The only reason I looked in a book with DD was because someone gave it to me. They are a waste of $ with all the better resources on the internet. Nymbler is my fave. Go on the Social Security Administration site for the official lists of popularity by year.
We like to incorporate a family name in each selection. With our DD, her middle name is shared by many important females in our family. If we have another DD, her first and middle name will be from family. If we have a DS, his middle name will be a family name.

We're choosing names with significance and personal meaning. My husband and I are also avid readers so we get a lot of name ideas from book characters.

I went to a website that listed name meanings. We made a list of names that we liked and liked the meaning of. We're still deciding on names though. All of his (6) siblings had names chosen by meaning and they are nearly spot on!
Re: Baby Names
it's a personal choice. Whatever you want to do. Some people pick family names, others don't.

We recently took a long walk through a cemetery looking for classic names.
