HPT Help

Hi Ladies!

I know that you all can't tell me I'm pregnant, but if I am I'm only three weeks and three days along. I keep getting BFN test results (hpt only). I talked to my OB/GYN and she said to take another next week. I think if it's still BFN then I'm going to schedule a blood test. What do you think? I know it may sound silly, but I just have a feeling. I've been SO happy lately. Not to mention my sex drive sky-rocketed. I've lost about 5-7 lbs in the past two weeks. I only get acne the week of my period, and I have it all over my bb's and my back (for about a week and a half). My lower back is cramping like crazy and I'm having to pee a lot and often. I'm sleepier than usual. Oh, I forgot the most obvious symptom. AF didn't show. I'm ALWAYS on time, and I mean up to the hour. I double checked and my DH and I sealed the deal on ovulation day, so if that doesn't mean anything I don't know what does. What are your opinions on scheduling for a blood test? I need any advice you can give! I've heard people can test negative up to late in the pregnancy, which doesn't really make sense to me.

Re: HPT Help

  • Actually, I used our 'conception' date to calculate this (that's how I got three weeks) so this makes me feel a bit better. Does anyone have any advice on what brand of HPT to get versus, say, a dollar store brand??

  • No, you dont need a blood test. HPTs are very accurate.

  • Wait a couple days then POAS again.  You do not need a blood test.

  • Agree. What you have are phantom symptoms. When women TTC, they become more aware if their bodies and tend to experience these phantom symptoms. If they were actual symptoms caused by the rise of hcg in your system, a pregnancy test would be able to pick it up. Don't waste your time with a blood test...it's unnecessary.

  • Those are called phantom symptoms. And your period is likely not coming because you are stressing. If you are pregnant enough to have those symptoms then you're pregnant enough to show positive on a HPT. IMO I would not waste time with getting a blood test done and good luck to you!

  • I agree with pp's...I think these are phantom symptoms.

Also, if you are just going by a regular calendar and which day you had sex vs. which day your period started to determine your "conception date," then you actually have no idea when you ovulated or conceived.

If you weren't charting basal body temps or at least using OPK's, then you have no true way to determine when you ovulated.  And even then, if you did, just because you had good timing does not mean that you successfully conceived.

All of that being said, if you truly are 3w3d, that is also still early to even get a positive HPT, so I would recommend that you wait until you think you are about 4w and test again, and see what happens at that time.  If you are 3w3d, then you haven't actually missed AF yet and your HCG may not be high enough to turn an HPT positive yet, but also wouldn't be causing that quantity of symptoms.

Oh, and one last thing, as far as your period "always" being "on time," there are always exceptions to that, and it probably has happened to you in the past and you just didn't notice, even if it was regularly just "late" or "early" by a few days, you may not have noticed when you were not TTC.

I ovulated 9 days late with my BFP cycle, and the only reason I knew that for sure was that I was charting temps and using OPK's.  If I had not been charting, I would have thought that I ovulated somewhere around day 14, and stopped actively having sex to TTC during that cycle, and probably would not have successfully conceived that time around.

Good luck, I hope you are right and this is your BFP cycle, but don't be shocked if you are not, the mind can do tricky things when TTC.

  • You don't need a blood test.  What you need is patience.  It sucks, but you just have to wait until a HPT can work.  If you are indeed 3w3d along then you are only about 10DPO which is very early for a +HPT.  GL

I was thinking the same thing, 3 weeks is early and typically periods arrive around the 4 week mark.  So likely you haven't even missed your period yet. Just be patient I know it's hard!! GL!

  • If you didn't have sex before you ovulated and you waited until you did ovulate, then typically that's too late.  It takes a while for the swimmers to get up there.

Stop stressing so much.  Also, typically, if you're far enough along to have symptoms, you're far enough along to test positive on a HPT.

This. By the time I had any symptoms, I had a positive HPT.

  • I wouldn't count yourself out so soon. I have seen ladies that test negative for up to a month before they finally get a positive on a HPT. Maybe wait a few days and test again.

I agree with many of the other ladies. Just wait a week like your doctor suggested. Don't stress because if you are pregnant, it wont be good for the baby. Good luck!

  • Thanks everyone :) it's so nice to come to such an uplifting/advice giving site :) good luck to all of you as well!!
  • 3w3d is a little early, just wait and test again in a few days. Its crazy the phantom symptoms that you can have. There were months where I just KNEW i was KU and I wasn't. The months I actually did get KU my first clue was a BFP. Good luck...

Any pink dye tests are fine.  Blue dye tests are notoriously awful.
  • I thought I remembered that from past experiences. I always thought they were positive, lol. Pink it is! Thanks :)
