Alexian Brothers

Hi everyone,

I live in Elk Grove Village. I will be giving birth at Alexian Brothers. Any reviews on anyone who has given birth here??

Also, anyone selling maternity clothes? As I am still tiny but looking ahead. I am 14 weeks right now. I am due Dec 14th.

Thanks!

Re: Alexian Brothers

  • I've worked their as a doula and it is decent facility wise. Nicer than St. Alexius, not as nice as Northwest Community. It really comes down to your provider and the type of birth you want if you will enjoy the experience. The nurses are all pretty nice, but the lactation support is lacking

  • I gave birth there in November! In general, my experience was positive. I spent a lot of time there during my pregnancy (2 overnight visits prior to my delivery for BP issues) and I thought the facilities were just fine. The food isn't half bad either.

My son was a preemie and the NICU staff there is great. Our son was in great hands. Since I had high BP and had to be on mag sulfate during delivery they did not allow me to BF (I think that's the reason anyways) right away. With all the complications I wasn't able to do it until day 3, and he never really latched so we FF now. I did rent a pump from them for a month, too.

I really liked my delivery nurse, Chrissy and my PP nurse Kathy. They were so awesome!

What OB practice are you going with? I used Female Healthcare and they have an office right at the hospital, so it's really convenient. I primarily saw Dr. Szwedo and Dr. Moran but a different doctor delivered me (can't think of his name). I liked the practice and will use them again for future pregnancies.

  • I gave birth there just about 3 years ago.  The hospital is ok.  I would not say it is the best in the area by any means.

A LOT of my experience had to do with my doctor.  I had Dr. Orhan and hated her!  She was rushed and had way too many patients IMO.  She was quick to section me and did not listen to me or my husband she even tried to bully me into a circumcision when my husband went home to shower.

I am planning to deliver there in the next month +/- and have a different doctor whom I love!  I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Mruz and Jill Edwards CNM.  They are awesome!   I feel so much better this time around with Mruz.

  • For maternity clothes, I've had good luck at Goodwill (got a pair of Gap long n lean maternity jeans for $4 and a Target maternity swim tank for $3 with the tag still on!) and I've gotten clothes from 3 ladies off of craigslist, 1 in Arlington Heights and 2 in Buffalo Grove. Very nice people and brand name clothing, some with tags still on!

  • I am with Advanced Medical Associates with Dr Yockey and Nicole. I absolutely love everyone at there office. THey are wonderful. They are inside of Alexian so it is very convenient.

I am planning on breastfeeding now but I am scared out of my mind to do it. I have just been doing research and that is it.

I hope I didn't scare you by saying they wouldn't let me. I was a high risk pregnancy, more than likely yours will go smoothly and your LO will be able to BF with you like a champ from the get go.

    Good luck with everything!

  • Oh no definitely not. I am back and forth on it right now. Trying to figure out what I want to do. I have some time to decide though since I am due December 14th. I am going to be working after my 6 weeks and I wont be able to pump when I go back to work unless I can figure out a way to do it. So just trying to figure out what is best for my baby right now. It is so tough.
  • I work there currently and had my baby there.  depending on your doctor you can labor in a tub but can not deliver.  the tub was amazng and did wonders for me. I used dr. mruz practice he has a midwife and its only the two of them so you will not get a rondom on call dr. delivering your baby if you are with them.  i wanted a natural unmedicated birth and they were totally supportive.  the nurses were great!  i had a 3 day labor and went through about 8 nurses they were all great.  good luck!
  • I live about 2 mins from Alexian Brothers but have heard nothing but raving reviews from Northwest Community Healthcare. I am due Dec 6th and will be making the drive to Northwest. I haven't heard anything "bad" about Alexian but the excitement women have for Northwest is very encouraging.

I delivered at NCH, before they had their new wing opened up - I delivered in Feb 2010, they opened it in May 2010, so I guess its not "brand new" now and had a great experience then, I can only begin to imagine how much nicer everything is now!

On a related note, one of my good friends was an L&D nurse at Alexian for years, and I'm friends with 2 other L&D nurses that are there still and it sounds like everything is nice.

  • I was originally with Dr. Yockey and Nicole but left. I interviewed doctors and visited Northwest Community Hospital. I not only love the new maternity ward but my doctor, Dr. McCool, is an amazing doctor. The entire staff is great. I'm due in 8 weeks and looking forward to delivering at Northwest Community.
  • When are you due?
