I'm almost 36 weeks and asked my DR that yesterday....he said he wasn't concerned yet...the baby can move basically up to delivery..I know some people/ drs offices do u/s to check tho starting a little earlier...mine doesnt however. I though all this time the baby was breech, but he felt and said baby was head down which is sweet! I guess I've just been feeling her butt and back pushing out on me!
My DR told me that usually by 36-7 weeks they are in the position they will likely stay in. Not that they can't flip or anything but because there is so much less room it is less likely that they do so. Since 20 week scan my little guy has been in the same favored position and hasn't changed it.
TTC since 2009 started going to RE 5/2011:
Polyp removed/hypothyriod 6/2011
7/2011 IUI#1 w/ 150 Follistim/Ovidrel trigger BFN
8/2011 IUI#2 w/225 Follistim/Ovidrel trigger BFN
10/2011 IUI#3 w/300 Follistim/Ovidrel trigger (BFP)

7/2013 Back to RE because my uterus is OLD
My docs like to be sure at 38 weeks. I think they are ok with not even doing internals til then if you dont want & arent high-risk. When I went to the hospital in labor, they did a US right then & there to make sure it was head down,,,, I was surprised by this. But I assume they may have even decided to slow down labor & then have me get a c section at that point. Scary, but still less scary then pushing & THEN still getting a c section. I feel bad for the moms who've had to do that!
At 35 weeks he scheduled the c section for 39 weeks...we were all hopeful that she would flip, though. It isn't totally unheard of for a baby to flip at the last minute...it just gets more uncommon after 36 weeks.

My doctor feels for it at 37 weeks. If it is breech, they do an ultraound at 38.5 to 39 weeks and if not flipped-- they offer a versioning or a c-section a touch before 40 weeks.
If your baby isn't in a good position when your doctor first checks, visit www.spinningbabies.com A lot of people have had success with turning their babies into an optimal birth position with exercises.
My baby was breech during most of the pregnancy. My midwife practice released me to their consulting OB at 34 weeks because they don't deliver breech babies. The OB was able to successfully turn the baby with an ECV this week (at 37 weeks).. but if we weren't able to turn, he was going to schedule a C Section any time between 39-40 weeks. This was after me trying everything possible (spinning babies, hot/cold packs, peppermint oil, visualization, Webster technique with a chiropractor, prayer!) to no avail. Ultrasound confirmed today baby is still in proper position so I'm back with the midwives!
Good luck!
