Is 8 weeks too long to check Progesterone

My first appt is at the 8 week mark  ...  I had m/c in Nov and I reminded them of that when I called to make appoint and asked should I come in early just for lab draws to check progesterone ...she told me not to worry about it unless i had bleeding or doubled over cramping  .. well by then it might be too freaking late ...  i did have an IUI before mc and had taken fertility drugs which I know can lower the prog  level  .. after that I stopped all meds and started taking vitex and have been for 4 months and then got BFP in june ....  my cycles did regulate and I read that Vitex can increase progesterone levels but you cant keep taking it when you pg .....  any thoughts on the levels ??

Re: Is 8 weeks too long to check Progesterone

  • My dr gave me progesterone pills to take for my last pregnancy. My progesterone level was fine. A friend of mine has the same dr and she took it too. Maybe you can ask your dr if he/she can give you a prescription. I took it weeks 6-12.

I would call them back and tell them you have low progesterone and you want them to call you in a prescription - tell them they are more than welcome to check your progesterone if they don't believe you. If they refuse, find a new doctor. I'm sorry but incompetent nurses are not worth risking issues down the road.

  • Fertility drugs generally raise progesterone, not lower it. You have a better ovulation with them and therefore the egg should produce more progesterone. This isn't always the case but it shouldn't cause low progesterone by itself.

I would call and ask them to check it for you now. But if by 5w4d you aren't spotting or anything, I'd guess your level is sustainable.

don't blame the nurse, she is following protocol.

  • I would call the nurse back and tell her that you have low progesterone and would like a blood test. If she refuses to honor your request, then ask to speak with the doctor.

My progesterone bottomed out in my 4th week of pregnancy, and if I had waited another week to start taking supps, I would have miscarried. FWIW, my level was only 0.9 and I wasn't bleeding, so I wouldn't be too comfortable using the 'not bleeding' theory.
