Favors for hospital visitors

My mom is visiting my grandfather in Venezuela.  We spoke yesterday on the phone and she mentioned that all her girlfriends were asking her what we were going to give out as favors after people came to the hospital to meet LO.  The thought had not even crossed my mind but my mom mentioned it's a Venezuelan tradition.

I am all about incorporating family traditions, however, if I do this I'd like for it to be very low maintenance.  After a quick search, I found personalized chocolate cigars.  That's something I could consider and would be kind of cute.  Has anyone thought/heard of this?

Re: Favors for hospital visitors

  • Never heard of this...usually the visitors bring snacks and gifts to the new mom/dad/baby, not the other way around.

I wouldn't turn down a chocolate when I visited a baby, but I also wouldn't do it myself, but I'm not Venezuelan.

Two boys already - ages 5 and 3...

    ...baby #3 is here...

  • I've never heard of this either! Seems interesting though. Definitely a nice surprise to those visiting. I love other culture's traditions!

  • What?! Is the 8lb meatloaf I just pushed out of me not a favor enough? Visitors are lucky I'm letting them hold my baby. No. No favors from me. I need fewer things to do, not more.

Although a cute idea for someone else.

THIS! I can't imagine about how stressed out I am going to be, let alone having to prepare favors for people who came to see me in the hospital. How about they come see me at home and bring some lasagna and a broom to help clean while I sleep. A mid-century "wet nurse" would also be a nice addition to the party so I can REALLY get some shut eye while she BF's...ha!

  • Wow that seems completely backwards. If you will be required to hand out something I think the chocolate or bubblegum cigars would be a great little gift and hopefully pretty hassle free. To me it seems it seems rude to visit someone in the hospital and expect to RECEIVE a gift!

  • My cousin had a case of Oh Henry! candy bars that she doled out to visitors in honor of her new son Henry.  But aside from that, I've never heard of such.
  • A friend of mine just had her baby and they gave out little candy bars with the little girls name on them.  It was the first time I had seen that.  While I thought it was cute, and sweet, I was WAY more interested in cooing at the baby!  I think it's nice if you want to, but if you don't, I don't think anyone will notice.

  • We were team green with DD so there was no time to prepare but my brother bought bubble gun cigars at the gift shop in the hospital that we gave out! I loved it!

I have also seen people do little packages of M&M's with the baby's initals on it or name if it will fit

I never heard of it either except for blue cigar for a boy and pink cigar for a girl.

But I think this is funny how it show different conception.... In the US, the new mom think it's a gift that she allowed other to come to the hospital. Elsewhere we thanks people who take their time to visit us and welcome our baby.

  • I'm sorry-I have no idea why that post was so strange!  (and it won't let me edit) please ignore!

  • Will you be having a lot of people visit at the hospital?  We are encouraging everyone to wait until we get home

I actually preferred people visit me in the hospital with DD.  In the hospital, everything was exciting and I was kinda running on adrenaline.  When we got home, we needed to settle in and start finding our routine and groove.  And try to sleep!

Also, I know no one expects me to entertain them when they come to my house after I had a baby.  In fact,  Many friends "re"visited a couple weeks after being home and brought meals, etc. BUT i still feel the need to make sure things were picked up and that we had snacks and drinks.  I wouldn't want that when I first got home.

  • We had little bird seed heart shaped favors that you hang in a tree for birds to eat, and then a paper bird tag made from recycled paper w/ wildflower seeds in it to plant. The gift tag said something along the lines of "Thank you for helping us in celebrating the newest member to our nest." We gave them out to all nurses, doctors, and family/friends who visited.
  • I'm hispanic, and it is usually done in the Mexican culture

For example the cigars, my friend just gave birth and made t-shirts but just for immediate family w little footprints saying "thanks for coming to visit my mommy and me, love (babys name). I've also seen little cake pops or cookies with lets say a liitle pink or blue footprint given out ! :)

     Here's the first site I found: https://www.chocolateimpressions.com/baby-chocolate-cigars.html

I'll probably do a little more digging around but I thought it was good start

I have a good group of core friends who will likely visit me at the hospital.  I kind of prefer the hospital visit over visitors at our home.  As a PP said, once I am home, I'd like to start working on a routine.

  • I have heard of it before, but it is a bit over the top. We didn't do anything with our first and aside from family, no one came to visit in the hospital. I doubt we will do anything again.

  • I don't want any hospital visitors beyond grandparents, so I am not giving anyone a gift. If you are going to step on cultural toes though, the chocolate cigars sound find.

  • We didn't do this, but friends just did.  They had actual cigars for the guys and cookie pops for everyone else.
