Abnormal pap

Long time lurker, first time poster. So I'm eight weeks and trying to quell my rising freak-out. Just heard back from my ob that my pap results came back abnormal. They scheduled me for a colposcope during my next visit in early July. This will be my second colp but my first while pregnant and it has me deeply worried. What if they tell me I have serious pre-cancerous cells? I'm assuming they would hold off any invasive treatments until after delivery. So here's my question....why bother with paps during during pregnancy? Anyone have any reassuring advice or similar experience? Thanks!

Re: Abnormal pap

  • P.It be be anything or absolutely nothing (which it probably is). I say dont worry till your told to worry :)

What if I have an abnormal pap smear during pregnancy?

It is safe to have a Pap smear during pregnancy. If your Pap smear results are abnormal, a colposcopy could be performed during your pregnancy. However, further treatment will probably be delayed until after your baby is born. Frequently, the birth of your baby will wash away any abnormal cervical cells. Having an abnormal Pap smear does not pose a risk to your baby.

  • Sometimes abnormal can mean ASCUS which means they just want to keep an eye on you to make sure no pre cancerous cells develope.  OR is can mean there are precancerous cells.  I know you can freeze those cells from ever becoming cancerous....can you do that during pregnancy I am not sure.  Sorry if I'm not much help, but I know cervical cancer is a slow growing cancer and if by the off chance you have it you can usually continue with pregnancy.

Dont worry, ABNORMAL doesnt ALWAYS mean cancer.

  • I have been having abnormal paps for 4 years. I have had a cryo and a few colpos.I was supposed to have the leep done but because I have a low platelet count it couldn't be done and we have been waiting for them to rise.

My last one was abnormal only low grade, it has been stage 3, I had a colpo scheduled for Tuesday, but I found I was pregnant. I'm still doing the colpo along with my first ob appointment.

I have also had a normal pap in between the abnormal ones.

  • I had an abnormal Pap got a colpo done and it was "inconclusive" meaning they didn't collect enough cells but the ones they did collect weren't cancerous. I've had paps since and nothing bad has come about (knock on wood) so I wouldn't panic just yet. Easier said than done, I know but just take a deep breath.

  • I've had two abnormal paps before and both turned out fine.  One was recently, 2 months before I got my BFP.  I had a colposcopy done both times and they turned out fine.  However, they made me take a pregnancy test before the last time because they said they will not perform it if I was pregnant.  Good luck!

  • I have had years of abnormal...my last before bfp was all happy. I heard if you have abnormal you cannot deliver naturally because it could affect baby...maybe that is why they do Paps throughout?

  • I had one and when they did another one, it came back fine.  So I'd just wait and see - could be nothing at all :)

^^ I had one I wasnt pregnant though but you can have them retest in 6 months instead of doing the colposcopy (sp?) I didnt know this at the time of course you will still have a  baby in your belly at six months!

  • They do. My ob, who is aware that I am pregnant, has ordered it. Also, while I'm nervous about the outcome in regards to the possibility of cervical cancer I don't think an abnormal pap has any bearing on the integrity of your cervix or the possibility of natural delivery. Thanks so much for the input ladies. Mrs. G, you are 100% right. It is so hard to not worry about all the terrible possible outcomes.

Actually, abnormal paps could be a sign of HPV and HPV can be passed on to your baby if you deliver naturally....with that said an abnormal pap may not be HPV but precancer cells have been linked to HPV
