1st Trimester

my doctor is retiring!

So I went in for my first OB appointment and found out that my Doctor is going to be retiring in October and that I will be switched to the resident taking over, I am not high risk but I am complicated and require more then the normal due to other health conditions. I wanted to know what some of you thought should I stick with my doc till October or switch now and start out with a new doctor?? Not sure what to do?. I am due in January with my third

Re: my doctor is retiring!

  • It is really a personal preference. Personally, I would probably want to switch sooner than later.  I would feel more comfortable choosing my own Dr. and seeing him/her for the majority of my pregnancy as opposed to being transferred to someone I may or may not like.

  • Yeah I really don?t like the idea of having little say in who I am switched to, that?s a good point one I hadn?t really thought much about? thanks J
  • My OB moved because her husband had to move for work when I was 8 mo. pg with my first DD. I was extremely nervous about getting a new doc at the last minute but it actually turned out that I LOVED my new doc even more than the first! Its totally your preference and I would do whatever makes you feel most comfortable and at ease. Good luck!

  • Can you meet the resident now? I would want to make the decision earlier, but it would be nice to know who you would be with.

  • the new resident doesn?t start till September making this even harder for me.  I really like my Doctor but I don't know about changing that late in the pregnancy.. I have never had this much trouble making up my mind!!

My doc retired right before I got pregnant. I was sad to get the letter, but I just moved on to other doc in the practice.

I had issues with my first preganacy & I'm already being watched closely for this one. I'm comfortable with the change, but I'm also already seeing the high risk (peri) doctor(s).

It's really all about what you are comfortable with. Good luck!

  • Depends what your comfort level is with the practice. Have you seen other doctors there? Have they been reasonably apprised of your unique issues? Do you trust them to hire a good person? If yes, I'd be ok with the switch.

I went in for my first appointment to find out it would be my last with my doc because she's starting an MFM fellowship (in the same practice/hospital but won't see regular patients).  I like all the doctor's who I've seen there so I'm comfortable getting transferred to one of her colleagues.
