For Mommies w/ girls - A wiping question.

This is probably the strangest question that I could ask but I am dumfounded.

When my DD poops... The poop usually goes up the front a bit. I always wipe front to back and try to get in between her front area a bit to make sure that there isn't any poop up there.

So tonight before her bath I noticed some white discharge. I had to look so I parted it a bit to make sure nothing funky was going on. There was sort of a yellowish discharge around her clitoris. I remember in the hospital they said that she would have discharge and not to wipe it.

It looked sort of gross and I don't know if this is normal or not... I wanted to wipe it but my husband said "Ask The Bump" before I did.

So does anyone know if this is normal? Should I wipe or should I call the pediatrician tomorrow?

  • Do you think it's residual poop from another time? I never heard to not wipe the dischage away so I always clean that area real good.. Oops I guess?? But anyway poop gets up in there and will make it a yellowish color and I wipe it away.
I give up on trying to make a ticker.... this new bump format is for the birds...

  • The normal discharge is white.  If it's yellowish, it may be a little bit of poop, too.  I would gently wipe.  The white discharge, smegma, naturally protects against infection.  The pediatricians have probably seen overzealous parents causing irritation the their LO's private parts by constantly cleaning this stuff out.  This is the primary reason why they tell you not to wipe.

  • Wipe it away I have five girls oldest 19 years, old and youngest two plus weeks. It is normal for little girls to have funky discharge Her cord has come off and she is bathed. So its ok to wipe fyi sometimes they get yeast infections so if it smells call the dr. If its just discharge wash it but use plain water no soap and separate wash cloths

  • I agree with everyone who posted. There is always a whiteish creamy discharge when you pull back the sides. When she poops, I wipe it out because usually it gets in there. If it's just pee, I don't pull it back. And when she gets a bath (every other day) I make sure to use the wet rag and gently wipe it out to get anything I may have missed.

  • My pedi said not to wipe it too. I just wash it with water and a washcloth in the bath.

  • I noticed it too when I was wiping about a week ago - I know that DD had a lot of vernix on her when she was born, so I assumed that that was just some that we didn't get (since we didn't really see it the way we saw the other stuff). I did wipe it off and haven't seen it come back.

  • My pedi told me not to go crazy trying to wipe it away. I find that it's hard for me to get it all off, and so I listen to her advice because I don't want to irritate the area.

My doctor said that the white discharge is completely normal. He said I can either wipe it or leave it. He totally left it up to me!

  • I always wipe really well after a poop to make sure we get all the poop/bacteria cleaned.  I care less with just pee.  Since she's only pooping about once a week right now, it's especially important (those are some biiiiiig poops and they get everywhere.  thank goodness for cloth diapers to contain the mess!) and I generally clean the area at least once a day.

I agree with this!! Don't scrub so that you irritate it but its okay to wash it and wipe..

  • I've wiped it away once - but it's only been white. I'll check that area when she poops just to make sure it didn't get in there. Otherwise I leave it alone.
  • The only time I've seen this, it was residual poop.  I wipe gently in her tiny baby lady bits to get the poop out when her BMs get messy, but most of the cleaning down there I do by rinsing her with warm water in the bath.

This is correct. You actually do want to seperate the labia and wipe in there because they can form adhesions and the labia can become fused. I've seen this a few times. I don't wipe away all the normal white but I ensure to spread and clean in there gently (typically one wipe front to back unless visable poop) with each diaper change.

  • Thanks ladies!

I just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing.
  • I've also noticed this, and always wipe it as I was never told not to.
