DD gets carsick - help please!

3 times now, my DD has vomited while riding in the car.  She is rear-facing.  I try to give her air.  Today I had the air on high and even cracked the window.  The poor little thing got sick all over herself her cup and her toy computer.  I'm pretty sure she's carsick as I get the same way.  Sometimes she is fine and others she starts to cry and fuss and then gets sick. . . Does anyone have experience with this?  I would greatly appreciate suggestions.  TIA

Re: DD gets carsick - help please!

  • Yep, my DD vomited quite a bit in the car. It was awful. Probably not what you want to hear, but the only thing that helped us was to turn her FF. We held off until just before she turned 2, but since then she's been great. Not once sick episode.

I was planning to RF until at least 3, but honestly couldn't deal any longer. We are both much happier!

Does it happen everytime, or just on longer trips?  DD#1 got car sick a few times on longer trips. We started giving her about 1/4 of a crushed up Dramamine in her water 30 minutes before we leave and that seems to help.

Maybe you could try one of those motion sickness wrist bands? Sorry, I don't have any other ideas for you if it happens everytime you're in a car.

That's not really what I wanted to hear!  Smile  I was kind of thinking that the rear-facing might be making it worse.  I've had to remove her carseat cover and clean the whole thing twice in the past week.  (a brand new Britax. . . ughh).  I don't want to turn her around, but it is really hard to deal with this.  (She's only 21 pounds, so she should be rear-facing for quite a while still.)

  • We turned DS FF at 12 months for the same reason. I understand RF until 2 is best but puck in a carseat changed my mind real quick. We also live in a super small town..speed limit on average is 30 mph and we are rarely in the car. Not saying we cant get in a bad wreck, just did what was best for us.  Good luck!

It doesn't happen every time we are in the car, and I can't figure out what the common link is. . . We live in a rural area, so running to the store is a 1/2 hour drive.  Last time, I fed her lunch and we left right after that.  She got sick about 10 minutes from home.  Today, she ate breakfast and we went shopping.  She was telling me that she wanted goldfish crackers and I fed her a few before we got into the car and she drank some water, but it was lunch time so I'd say her belly was pretty empty.  I had the air on and the window cracked because that helps me.   I'm wondering if some gripe water would help her. . .

     Thanks for your suggestions.

I know what you mean!  I keep telling my DH and inlaws that she will be RF until she's at least 2 years old.  We do not live in town and have to travel on the interstate (65 MPH) to go grocery shopping. That's another reason I want to keep her RF.

  • DS got carsick very badly (at least 5 times a week) and we were at our wit's end.  We tried everything, including turning him FF (I did not want to do that either, but it was just unbearable and unfair to him so we had to try), and even that did not help. We tried not feeding him close to a car ride, or feeding him a light snack, putting a DVD player in front of him to keep his eyes forward and not looking out the side windows....everything.

We finally found the solution.  I was so skeptical, but it was our last resort, so I bought a pair of motion sickness wristbands.  We have been using them for about 7 weeks now and the child who would get carsick 5+ times per week has not gotten sick even ONCE.

I never would have thought something so simple could fix what had turned into such a huge problem, but we were amazed.  We bought them for about $9 on One Step Ahead's website (I have read that drugstores sell them but ours did not have any, and you need the child's size).  The reviews on the site overwhelmingly said they worked also.  It doesn't for everyone (just like flipping them FF doesn't for everyone) but for 9 bucks it's worth a shot!!

    Good luck!

  • OP try blocking lo's view out the window. My niece was a projectile vomiter and got car sick easily and seeing things rush by out the side window made it worse. A tea towel in the window or something similar should do the trick. You'll just have to adjust how you shoulder check and use your mirrors on lane changes. I used a small curved mirror on the side of my side mirrors to help see in the blind spots.

I still think rf wins over car sick, better puke than a broken neck, and I've cleaned my fair share.

  • Thanks for all of the suggestions!  I'm going to try some new things and I'm hoping that we can get this under control before long.
