What did you do for your 3yo bday party?

Games? Food? Prizes? What worked and didn't work for this age group?

  • We did hers at a local gymnastics gym that has an indoor jungle gym/obstacle course, trampolines, etc. They did games and then ate cake and ice cream (planned it for right before afternoon nap time) and goody bags and a balloon were part of the package.

  • We did a "DS' favorite things" party so we served mac & cheese, cheese quesadillas, chocolate milk and hot dogs and then had sidewalk chalk, a baby pool, water balloons, etc. to play with.

Goody bags were small Dr. Seuss totes I found at Target with coloring books, crayons, bubbles and a few other little things that DS was into at the time.

Similar to this!  We did a hot dog themed party for my DS when he was 3.  I grilled hot dogs and burgers, and we basically had a cookout.

When my kids turned 2 and 3, I did not do kid parties for them.  The guests were family members and close friends.  So we didn't need goody bags.

  • Hello Kitty themed (DD's choice). We set up the photo booth you see in my siggy and took pics of each family as they arrived. DH set up the printer in the corner of the living room and printed the pics. I had pre-cut construction paper hearts and laid out glue sticks and other craft stuff. Each kid glued their photo on the paper heart and decorated it. We did a panini bar for food. Kids and adults were happy.

  • We did DS at a kids water park at our local aquatics center. We had it privately rented for 2 hrs and the littles got to run around and eat pizza for 2 hrs. They loved it and so did the parents. DS had a pirate theme.

I stuck to cheap and easy and things DS would LOVE!

We had a Thomas the Train themed cake baked by my Mom and decorated with those colors.

We had a tattoo salon with fake tattoos and a blowdryer... the kids LOVED it, and he has cousins all ages all the way up to 12 doing it.  They were all tatted up, lol.

Then we had a power-wheels race down our front hill (it's about the size of a football field) and asked my BIL to bring his kid's powerwheels and another person so we had three, and stuck two kids on each.  I held a piece of paper streamer with my sister holding the other end as the finish line they could break though.  At the end everyone got a plastic gold metal necklace that came on a red/blue and white string (I got a whole bag at walmart for super cheap).

We also had a "photo booth" and had a photographer at the party snap a lot of fun photos... we had props and mustaches the kids/parents could put on.

We went the easy route and ordered pizza, and had lots of options for drinks.

Edit: I forgot they bobbed for apples too!  His birthday is in September, so it was the right time of year :)  The kids got soaked though, they loved it!

We had ours at a venue that catered to young children. Fairy theme-the girls put on wings played in a castle, glitter nail polish, fairy dust. The hostess tried musical chairs but it wasn't a big hit. The girls enjoyed the 'free play'. We served quesadillas and cupcakes.

  • DD #1 who has a summer b-day we just had friends/family over for a backyard party.  Cake, the sprinkler, sand box and a small bounce house thing.  Very simple and the kids just had a blast running around the yard.  No planned games - had some soccer balls out as well.  We did not open gifts (did that later with just family) and we kept the party to 1 1/2 hours and we planned the party from 3-4:30 as the kids that were invited all nap from someplace between 12-3 so it worked great timewise.

For DD#2 who has a March b-day, we did a small friend party at this great train store that has a private room for parties.  Right next to the private room is an area with a ton of kid train tables set up.  Again, party was only an hour and a half but we held the party in the morning and served subs and cake since we had a less people and the cake was included, we still kept the price really low.  No games or activities planned, the place had some crafts set up for the kids and they played with the trains.  We did open gifts at this party since we had such a small number of kids.
