Natural Birth

GD

Does having gestational diabetes mean I cannot have a natural birth?

Re: GD

  • I think each case is individual. If you are able to control your sugars and keep your baby a healthy size, then you should absolutely still be able to do it!

I'm in the process of determining if I have GD right now, so I have been looking in to how it will affect the natural process a lot. :) Good luck!

  • Absolutely not.  I was GD (altho I honestly doubt the diagnosis but that is a whole different story).  I was on glyburide and my numbers were always low, on the verge of being too low actually.  I did have to be induced bc my OB's office that I had to switch to after the tests got all huffy about me going past my DD.  I did have to have continous monitoring and was confined to a bed, and I'm not going to lie, it was definitely rough at times, but I did make it thru without getting an epidural.

My son was born perfectly healthy with no problems with his own blood sugars and at a perfectly normal weight of 7lbs 4oz.  We were discharged at exactly 24hrs too and have had no issues ever since.  Good luck!

  • My midwife said that as long as my sugar is under control and we continue to pass our weekly NSTs, there's no reason we can't go ahead with our plans for a natural birth. I was nervous about that too, but even after having to start meds to control my GD, we're still on track for a hypnobabies birth in a few weeks!

  • I had GD and a successful home birth. You just have to follow your diet and keep your sugars under control.
  • I had diet-controlled GD and I was able to give birth naturally.  Toward the end of my pregnancy we had a lot of pressure from my doctors to induce.  They didn't wan't me to go past my DD, but since I was being monitored I knew that the fluid levels, heartbeat and movement were all fine.  I ended up going 1 1/2 week over my DD - our little girl weighed 7lbs 3oz (they had estimated that she would be 8.5lbs by my due date).  There was some meconium, but the dr. easily suctioned that up and it didn't really have any affect on the baby.

  • No.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • you are the lowest risk if you can manage it with your diet & do not need medication. if you need medication, then your risk goes up & many md's want to deliver by your due date if thats the case. that can make a natural birth more difficult, but not impossible. just work that diet & exercise & keep those sugars low & you'll be ok.

  • As long as you are able to keep your blood sugar levels under control, you will have nothing to worry about and can continue with natural birth just fine. Even sometimes if the baby ends up being a bit overly large, you can still manage to have a natural birth. It'll just be more difficult.
