Ultrasound question

So I went to my first appointment today. And I am just wondering, do you normally get an 8 week ultrasound? Or just high risk regnancies? I guess my dr said you don't. But I was under the impression you get one to ensure the pregnancy is viable. Hmmm...

Re: Ultrasound question

  • It depends on the doctor, your insurance and your past history.

  • I think it depends on their equipment too. Mine gives me one every time I go in.  They have the machines in the rooms.

  • It definitely depends on the doctor.  I got one at 8 weeks to rule out an ectopic and determine how far along I was.  Had nothing to do with being high risk.  It was standard.

  • The only reason that I got one then was because I didn't know for sure how far along I was. So they did one just so they could have a date and measure. I think it all just depends on the hospital and the doctor.
  • I'm pretty sure it depends on your dr. I got one at 6 wks and now have to wait till 20 wks

  • It definitely depends on the doctor, my doctor has all his equipment in his office so everytime I go I get a U/S. I started going since 6 weeks so I did get an U/S very early and it wasnt because I was high risk.

  • If there is nothing in your history to indicate a problem it's not medically necessary. My OB did one but that's just their policy.
  • I got one every so often during my last pregnancy because I had gestational diabetes.  My first appointment this time I got one because I had spotting two days earlier.  It varies depending on where you do.  Like someone else said, insurance and history has a lot to do with it as well. Best of luck to you!

  • We had our first appt yesterday at 11 weeks. We got a dating ultrasound, but didn't get one with DD. Just depends on the doctor, insurance, and your pregnancy.

Edit- Also we told her we weren't planning this pregnancy so maybe she didn't really trust that I knew what I had my last period. lol oh well, I loved having an early ultrasound.

  • I get an ultrasound at every appointment because the Dr.'s office has an ultrasound machine in their office. My insurance only covers one ultrasound per pregnancy and I believe that will be the A/S scan at 20 weeks. It just depends on your insurance and Dr.

  • Depends on doctor and insurance. Mine gave me an ultrasound today to ensure that I was measuring accurately.

  • My first ultrasound is scheduled for next week, when I will be 6 weeks.  I was also wondering if that is early, but the nurse just said that's when they had the next slot open so they gave it to me! I don't have any risks as far as I know of, but now I'm wondering if this will be TOO soon? I hope it's not too soon to hear the heartbeat!
