STM+, a weight question (sorry!)

Question for you, regarding weight, touchy subject, repetitive subject, blah blah blah, I know, but I'm curious.

For those of you who gained 35+ lbs during your pregnancy, how was it losing it? (If you did lose it?) Did you find BF helped? Did it take awhile to come off?

Just curious, as I'm reaching that already, and am a little nervous about losing it.

TIA!

It's different for everyone, you can't expect your story to match anyone elses.

I tried BF'ing and ended up switching to FF.  I had gained about 40 lbs with DS and was able to fit back into my PP clothes at about 6 months PP - I'm not sure what my weight was since I didn't own a scale.

Some girls lose all the weight in a month, some girls never lose it all and will remain at a different weight after birth.  Most fall somewhere in between.

Just eat healthy, stay as active as your lifestyle allows.  Focus on being happy & healthy, not on a number on the scale.

ETA: My doctor told me "Nine months on, nine months off" - so I fully expected to not see final results until DS was 9 months old - which is when I got pregnant again and was weighed at the doctor's office.  I was right back to where I was when I got pregnant with DS.

  • I am big on the weight gaining topic because i tack it on big time while pregnant.  With DS, I gained 50lbs.  So far, I am up around 30lbs, and right on track to gain it the exact same way.  This time I have even been smarter about my food choices.  Yea...doesn't matter.  I hope you have better luck than I did with losing the quick weight in the beginning.  But, in all honesty, DS was 7lbs, 7oz, and a week after having him, I was down 8lbs :(  I didn't really start to try to lose the weight right away.  But, when I did, and finally found what worked for me, it really dropped off.  I wound up losing 65lbs total by the time he was 2.  I found that the only thing that worked for me was Weight Watchers with a combination of some exercise.  I hate working out.  I would rather diet every day of my life.  So, I would do P90X with DH about 4 nights per week.  This time, I plan on doing WW again for sure, and getting "10 Minute workouts" by the same company.  I only breastfed for 2 weeks, so that didn't make a difference for me either.  Good Luck!  And if you ever need support, feel free to reach out to me.

Thanks, I'm just nervous, because I lost 100 lbs before I got pregnant, and I'm already up 35. So I'm a bit bummed.... but I'm trying to eat as healthy as I can, although I do give in a few times a week to ice cream or a fast food meal. (No more than 2x/wk do i have one or the other.) It took me 2 yrs to lose the weight, and I was a hard core worker-outer, and now my ankles hurt by the end of the day it's hard to even want to go out walking. Just looking for support! :)

  • I gained A LOT with my first pregnancy (7 years ago) and honestly I never really lost all of the wait but to be completely fair I wasn't really committed to loosing it either.  Within a couple of months I was naturally down about 30 pounds of the weight I gained while pregnant and struggled to loose the rest for years and years.  Right before we found out I was pregnant this time I was down another 30 lbs!!  So fart this pregnancy I've only gained 24 lbs, which I'm rather proud of considering how much I gained the last time, I know this time I can loose the weight with a little hard work and self control!

I hear ya.  I feel the exact same way.  I was getting upset about it in the beginning because I did it before, and didn't want to do it again, but have now realized it is totally out of my control.  Probably the same for you.  All you can really do is just stay as healthy as you can, and know that you have some work ahead of you.  We will do it together :)  I did read that if you are able to do minimal walking during pregnancy, the weight will come off quicker.  I am one to talk.  I was walking every day for about 2 weeks and stopped totally.  It is just way too hard and everything hurts.  But, hopefully I can get back into it, even if it is like 10 minutes a day.  Hang in there.  You definitely have my support!

  • I gained 40 lbs with DS (15 of it was fluid from pre-e). I lost all but 5 lbs of it by my 9 week checkup (6 week was pushed back, as doctor had surgery). I was breastfeeding and eating whatever I wanted. I know I lost the remaining 5 lbs, but then gained back 10 lbs after I stopped nursing. I bounced around a bit, but was still up 10 lbs when I got pregnant with #2. So far, I've only gained 12 lbs with this pregnancy. I'm hoping to keep it under 25 - but we'll see!

  • I'm a FTM, but totally know where you're coming from! I was on weight watchers before I got pregnant and lost 45 pounds! It only took me 5 months, and I was super excited! I've only gained 10 pounds so far, so I hope it stays to a minimal. I plan to go back on weight watchers after LO is born to help lose the baby weight, and continue losing weight as I wasn't down to my goal weight when I got pregnant. Do what feels good for you, but weight watchers was amazing for me!

  • I gained 45 lbs. with my first and didn't BF. It took about 8 months for me to get comfortably back in my pp clothes, and another 6-8 months to drop another size - but I didn't do anything but chase after my son and watch what I ate. If I'd gotten my @ss in gear sooner and worked out, I probably would've dropped the weight sooner.

This time around, my weight's more in check now [gained 15 pounds in nearly 27 weeks; I was about double that last time around], but I blame that on the nausea that has just now subsided and my general aversion to food. I have signed up for two 5Ks in early 2012 that will pretty much require me to get in gear and start training after my OB clears me, and that's my motivation to kick the baby weight and get back to my pp size sooner.

  • I gained 50 with DD1.  Never really lost it all.  BFing didn't help at all (I nursed for 17 mos).  I never really tried to lose though.  I probably always had that lingering 10 that if I really tried I could have lost....just didn't care enough.  I am sick of being  a little overweight though, so after this baby I am hitting the treadmill!!!  Oh, and don't worry about it, my sisters all gain 70+ lbs and got down to starting or below original weights, everyone is different.

  • Not that this is what you want to hear (and everyone is different), but I only gained 6 lb above pp weight because pregnancy "cured" a condition I have that makes it hard to lose weight...so I lost a TON then only got to 6 above pp weight.

So when I had my baby, I was below pp weight. I couldn't fit into my old pants.

In the end, it took me weighing a good 30 lbs BELOW pp weight to fit into my pp jeans, because my hips spread so much during pregnancy.

Boy, I can't wait to see what I look like after this one! ;)

Also, I breastfed until just last month so I don't know for sure how things would have changed once I stopped, but I think breastfeeding helped me hold on to a little extra fluff. Most say it helps them lose.

I just try not to sweat it. I exercise and eat well, but I just don't care that my body won't be sculpted for a while longer yet. One day I won't have tiny ones anymore and it will be easier to get myself in shape. Granted, one day I'll get a boob reduction and lose 10 lbs easy right there. ;)

  • I gained 50 pounds with each baby.  I started off petite (~110, 5'3"), I just ballooned during pregnancy for no good reason at all - I was on the GD diet, so it wasn't my diet!  ;)

Losing it was a breeze, really.  I mean, not like "wore my skinny jeans home from the hospital" breeze, so have realistic expectations, but within a few months I was down to about 10 pounds to lose.  I didn't BF at all - we started FFing on day 1.  Just the combo of being busy with a new baby, not eating much during the day, etc.  I started with short walks about 2 weeks after my c/s, and worked up to longer walks with the stroller - that was really the extent of my working out until 6-7 months after baby.  I did the 30 Day Shred workout when I was finally tired of those last 10 pounds and (imho) looked great after that.

I've been gaining slower this time, but will still end up at at least 40 pounds of gain.  I plan to go about it the same way - watch what I eat, walk with the babies, and Shred the rest off.

  • I gained around 40 with DD. I'm right on track to do the same with this baby, as of yesterday I'm up 25lbs. I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight within a few weeks of having DD. I however could not fit into any of my pre-pregnancy pants until closer to 3 or 4 months. I EBF'd DD for a year.

Gained 40, lost it all without really trying. I BF for 8 weeks and did lose a lot right away. The last 10 or so took a little longer. I say within 4 months I weighed the same but was not the same size. It took a year for my clothes to fit the same, then I got k/u again.

  • I totally understand your concern. I am a nut when it comes to weight. I gained 37 pounds with My daughter and between BF (6 months) and exercising I got back to my normal size in about 6 months. I mean, It was a lot of work including eating healthy :( but I did it. If you set your mind to it you'll accomplish it.

  • I gained 50 and it took nearly 7 months but almost zero effort to lose it all.  Yes, I was bfing.

I've always figured 9 months to gain, 9 months to lose so didn't stress too much about it.

  • I gained 39lbs with DD1 and 40 with DD2. With DD1 I BF'd and that helped. But it took almost 9 months, the nurse wasn't lying when she said "9 months on 9 months off!"  With DD2 I hit a plateau after about 3 months so I joined Weight Watchers. They have a plan for BFing mothers and it was WONDERFUL!  I lost all of my pregnancy weight plus some.  I will be doing it again after I have DD3.  Also, those habits I continued to use from WW has helped me gain less weight this pregnancy.  Even with the 6lbs gain I had todayHuh?, I am still only up 15lbs at 26 weeks.  I was definitely past 20lbs at this point with my other 2.

  • I gained 40+ lbs my first pregnancy (20 in the last four weeks). A lot of it was water according to my OB. By one week PP i had lost half of my pregnancy weight. Other than BF and not eating any junk food I wasnt doing anything to lose the weight. I had 5 stubborn lbs that i never lost, but i stopped trying to lose weight once i got back into my pre-pregnancy clothes.

I have already gained 20lbs (as of 25 weeks) with this pregnancy and I find it depressing that I am gaining more this time, but I am making healthy food choices and trying to stay active. My OB hasnt commented on my weight, so i guess its fine. baby2 is healthy and if I have to work my butt off to be skinny again, I will!

  • I gained about 60 lbs with DS. A great deal of this was water weight due to pre-e, however. I never struggled with my weight before having DS, but I seriously did after! It took me a good year to lose all but 7 or 8 lbs. I have been gaining quite a bit this time around as well and I think it will most likely be even harder to lose :(

  • I don't fit your criteria, but my cousin, best friend, and work neighbor all gained that much. Both my cousin and best friend swore by breastfeeding as a great help with the weight lose, but they both also worked out (cousin is doing insanity and bf is doing stroller moms) My coworker couldn't produce enough milk to bf her kids. She gained 70 lbs with the first and 50 with the second. She took off all of the weight using weight watchers.

  • I'm the minority here, but I gained nearly 40lbs with DS (who was 5lbs & induced because I had almost no amniotic fluid). I was skinny-average before PG with him, but within 2m I was back to pre-PG weight & under pre-PG weight from 3m on. I was eating anything & everything literally all the time.

I had only gained maybe 2lbs until a month ago because we're still nursing. I cut back to one 5 min session before bed & gained 8lbs in the span of 4 weeks. BFing made my metabolism go absolutely nuts.
