Signing Question

N knows the signs for milk and drink now.  And he does them all.the.damn.time!  I swear I just spent the last 3 hours with my boobs out.  But sometimes he doesn't nurse when he signs milk.  He just grins and giggles, stares at my boob, gives my nipple a squeeze and goes about his business.  Sometimes he'll take a quick sip and that's it.

Do you suppose he's just repeating the same thing over and over because he knows the sign and can do it?  Kinda like when kids learn a new word and say it all the time?  I don't want to not give him milk if he does want it but it would be awesome to not have to whip a boob out every 5 seconds.  I've tried redirecting him and sometimes that works but more often he won't be deterred.

Re: Signing Question

  • Avery does all done ALL THE TIME. He really is never done when he does it, but he also does the hyper active version of all done..I think he just enjoys being a little crazy. Although he knows the signs for Milk, All Done, and More, we have had to go off other cues.

  • I think it is just the novelty of it.  At least I hope so.  Evie just learned the sign for nurse too and she does it often and then latches for a second and crawls away.  I am hoping onces she get over the initial excitement of, "I can make mom whip it out when I do this!!!"  she will ask less often.

A friend of mine has a 1.5 year old and I remember her complaining about this when her son first learned the sign for nurse too.

  • I think he's just excited that you know what he means. Isaac does that with "more" sometimes. The signing book I have says that just because you know what he's saying doesn't mean you have to do it. The example she says in the book is that her daughter would wake up in the middle of the night and sign "Play" and the mom would say "That's right, that means play (sign for play). We'll play in the morning. Right now it's time for sleep (sign for sleep)." Maybe you can redirect him that way.

  • Maya uses "all done" a lot- and not always when she means it.  She started doing "more" last week, but usually does "all done" first.

  • I would offer the boob the first time he signed milk or drink but not everytime. If he didn't drink much the first time then next time he signed, I'd tell him he has to wait a little bit. I would acknowledge what he's signing but not give in everytime.

  • Thanks guys.  I'll start acknowledging but not whipping out my boob at every milk sign :)
