Babies: 3 - 6 Months

NOTHING helps...so when does it improve on it's own?

My DD has horrible gas.  Up for hours upon hours crying, squirming, etc.  Have tried everything.  Recently put on Nutramigen and was a MIRACLE (whole new baby!) for about 4 days... and now it has come raging back.  She's on Nexium for reflux, too btw.  Anyway - I've tried it all.  Massages, tummy time, warm water/compress, bicycling, Gripe Water, gas drops, breast milk, different formulas, the Windi ( which is the only thing that really helps relieve it, but I can't do this all day and all night).  I thought Nutramigen was my answer but obviously it's not.  Nothing freaking works.  So...when does gas get better with age?  She will be 8 weeks old this Saturday.

  • Mine had similar problems. I ended up changing her bottle and it worked! Still a small amount of gas but it was a huge improvement. We're using Dr. Brown's bottles. Good Luck!

  • I already use Dr. Browns.... I wonder if a different one would help her.  God only knows which ones, though!

As her digestive system matures, things may improve. DD isn't nearly as gassy as she once was. I can't remember when the difference became really noticeable, but it's been for a little while.

If you want to try switching bottles to see if that helps, I'd suggest the Tommee Tippee sensitive tummy bottles.

  • And then if Tommy Tippee does not work, there is the Playtex Vent-Air.  Those are the ones we use.

We use the Playtex Ventaire bottles too. We LOVE them. Aria had terrible gas after we first switched her to formula. Changing formulas helped a bit, but the bottle has been a game-changer.

We were using the Tommie Tippee bottles originally. Since switching to the Playtex Ventaire, Aria has rarely had any gas, and I can count the times she's spit up on one hand. Definitely recommend!

  • We had the same problem. We switched formula to Enfamil Gentlease and that's what helped my LO. I have a ton left over if you want it. You can email me if you do... nicki.henry@yahoo.com
  • Ok, maybe I'll try those and see what happens...thanks ladies.

Nicki - thank you very much - we've tried that one and it didn't work either.  Thanks though!!!

  • Are you using a "ready to feed" formula?  My pedi told me to use only ready to feed until DD was at least 4 months old because no matter how well you think you've mixed the formula, there can be little pockets that burst (like pancake batter) and the powder can really do a number on their immature digestive systems.

  • Have you tried any other hypoallergenic formulas like Alimentum, Elocare, or Neocate? DD2 was super gassy and then had green, mucousy poop. She can't tolerate dairy or soy protein, so I had to cut those foods from my diet. After 4-5 wks, her poop went back to normal and she's not so gassy. She used to be sleeping, eating, or crying, now she's very happy and content. Anyway, sometimes people have to try a few of the hypo formulas before they find one that's a good fit.

  • I am sorry you are going through this. With that said I was there with my DS and we figured it out to be a food allergy he has MSPI we have him on the nutramigen and it worked but we were told of that did not work than he would have to try the next step which was a formula even more broken down ( neocate, eclare) You might also want to consider the alumintium (sp) which is the Similac version of the nutramigen Our GI told us that some kids can handle only enfamil or Similac We also have to have DS on the ready to feed stuff as he can not tolerate the power.
  • We had the same problem with AJ. We tried everything, but didn't see any improvement until he got a little older...around 10 weeks. Now hes still just as gassy but it doesn't cause him any discomfort. He thinks its funny most of the time. Daycare even commented today that he's always passing gas. He's pretty stinky but at least he's not in pain anymore...GL!

  • My daughter had colic and has silent reflux.  She was on Nutramigen on and off while I EP'ed and then I went to straight Nutramigen around 6 weeks.  It takes a while for it to work fully, so I'd give it a little more time.  THAT SAID, we are now transitioning her back to Gentlease.  She never had a milk allergy and her reflux has gotten worse on the Nutramigen.  DH read something about how these super broken down formulas can cause excess stomach acid because there isn't enough work for the stomach to do.  So we've been slowly mixing in the Gentlease and she's getting better.  She was gassy at first, BUT nothing like when she was younger and really colicky.  Hopefully that makes sense.

Oh, and I didn't know this, but Similac Sensitive is apparently lactose free, so that might be another formula to try.  Just start transitioning slowly with a 2 to 1 ratio and then half and half and then 1 to 2.  It's been a week and we're still only doing half and half (I also wanted to use up the rest of my Nutramigen since its so stinkin' expensive).

  • And one other thing...

We tried all those special gas drops and gripe water.  A bunch of gals on my FB recommended this product called Colic Calm.  It's found at CVS only or online at coliccalm.com.  Anyways, the product is all natural and helped us during those screaming/crying fits.  It's not going to make it go away, but it seemed to work better than all the other stuff we tried.

Also, I make all of my daughter's bottles in advance and using the Dr. Brown's pitcher.  This allows the formula to settle so there aren't air bubbles.  I have used Dr. Brown's, Playtex Ventaire and Playtex Drop-In bottles.  The Playtex nipples were perfect IMO.  Dr. Brown's were a little too fast so I bought the Preemie Nipples and then I used those bottles more.  I think I put the Level 1 nipples back on sometime after she turned 2 months.

  • Maybe the Nexium needs to be changed to something else.  With my first she was placed on Zantac which did squat...she was switched to Prevacid which was a lifesaver.  My second was put on Zantac, which I was really skeptical about since it did nothing for my first and it was like a miracle - it works great for him!

As for the gas, have you tried Colic Calm?  It's on the expensive side for what it is, but when my DS was going through bad gas issues this was the ONLY thing we tried that helped and it def helped!  I think it was $20 for a bottle at CVS, but you only use a tiny amt at a time so it lasts.  I checked with my pedi and she said it's worth a shot -- one of those things that either works or doesn't, without any real gray area.

  • I know it seems silly and like this would have nothing to do with gas but have you read Happiest Baby on the Block and tried the "5 S's"? This literally changed our lives with our daughter when she was a couple months old and we thought nothing was working. Nutramigen, Prevacid, Colic Calm, gas drops, Dr Browns bottles, bicycling, etc. we tried everything and she just always was so squirmy and fussy and just not relaxed ever. We started the 5 S's and literally she just started being so relaxed. It was amazing and I wish I had read it while I was pregnant so I would have been more prepared!

  • You mentioned breast milk. So you are pumping and sumplementing with formula? Have YOU tried an elimination diet. It could be caused by a food allergy that you are eating. Dairy and gluten are the most common causes.

My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

  • This was us for a while too.  We tried everything you've tried and every bottle under the sun!  Ended up with playtex ventair....those worked the best for us.  But, ultimately things will get better as she gets older.  Hang in there!

  • This.  I would definitely ask the dr about switching to an elemental formula like Neocate.  My LO has MSPI and he had terrible gas and tummy pain to the point he would not sleep, up crying, squirming, grunting, etc.  A milk soy protein intolerance is when your LO is having trouble digesting the milk proteins found in "regular" formula or BM.  Especially when your LO seemed to be better on Nutramigen for a few days,  it was probably easier for him to digest initially then "regular" formula, YKWIM?  Talk to the dr about an elemental formula and if you switch try to give it at least two weeks to work, your LO needs time to adjust.
