Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Is your 7 week old still sleeping a lot during the day?

When do babies become more alert and less sleepy during the day?

  • Yep.  Based on the books I've read about such things, the typical 7-week-old still needs 3-4 naps per day totaling 5-6 hours.

  • DD does not like daytime sleeping. She takes 3-4 naps a day but they are usually 15-30 minutes at a time. That said, she's an awesome night sleeper so I count my blessings there.

We're the same.  Unless of course LO is being held, when she'll consent to sleep for a 3-hour nap.  This is exactly why I've been reading books about baby naps. lol.

  • Yup, he sleeps much of the day still and sleeps a 7.5 hour stretch at night, eats then sleeps another 3 hours then is up in the morning for about an hour before napping.

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.
  • My LO sleeps a lot but is slowly transitioning to more night sleep and less day sleep at almost 7 weeks.

She now does, on average, 11-12 hours a night with 1 wake for a feeding (10pm-9/10am).  A 30-60 minute morning nap, a 1-2 hour afternoon nap, and then an hour evening nap.

  • Yep, my little one is still sleeping like a newborn, which is completely different from my first who had to be awake because he didn't want to miss out on anything.  DS2 sleeps most of the day, I can get probably one good 2 hour stretch of alert awake time.  Other than that, he's barely awake for feedings still.  But he still sleeps well at night so I'm not complaining.  He's just a sleepy kid, I'm sure soon he'll start being more awake.
  • She's been teetering back and forth - no real schedule yet, but definitely more awake time in general than a month ago.  However, she slept for 2-3 hours between feeds the last two days and today (when Daddy is home and desperate for sleep), she's fought every nap until she collapses.

I'd say she is averaging 6 hours during the day.

  • My ds varies but he is trying to stay alert more during the day time. He is 51 days old.
