3rd Trimester

Should I eat the cake and ice cream?

I have another glucose test tomorrow. The first time for me was about 14 weeks, I have a history of diabetes on my mom's side of the family so they tested early. It was a surprise test to me. I walked in for my normal check up and they asked if I had time. I passed with flying colors.

Tomorrow I take the 1 hour again and was told not to fast, eat normal, blah, blah, blah. I'm wondering what I should do about dinner tonight...if I should just go about it normal or watch? Today is DH's birthday Smile so there will be dinner out and cake and ice cream...what's a girl to do?

  • I would have the cake and ice cream if it was the night before but not the day of.

I had slightly high results when I did my test but I tested after having cookies and iced tea so it could be why I had slightly high results.

  • eat it tonight, but tomorrow morning skip the carbs before the test. If you must eat anything, eat plain yogurt, eggs and meat, not bread, bagels, or anything sweet. You'll be more likely to pass it and it'll keep you from having to come back and take the 3 hr test.  If you spike up your sugar too much, then you'll have to deal with having to come back and the 3 hr test is long and boring.

  • Go for it.

But tomorrow before your test, I'd fast (if it's a morning appointment). Or at least stay away from carbs and sugar if it's an afternoon appointment.

My midwife said that even though fasting is not a requirement, she sees girls just barely fail the test ALL the time for this reason. And then you have to go back for the 3 hour and pretty sure you have to fast for that one anyways.

  • I'd bury my face in it and eat my way to the bottom...ugh, I have such a ridiculous sweet tooth now.

Anyway, yes, eat and enjoy it!!

  • I had a little ice cream the night before my test.  I did have a healthy breakfast though - scrambled eggs and a piece of whole wheat toast.   I passed no problem.

I don't think changing your diet for a few days will change how your body processes the sugar at the test.

  • Ugh, I don't know...I laid off sugar the entire day before my test and it was well worth it to me to pass and only take the one hour!  Eat at your own risk....I'd put a big slice in the fridge and reward myself with it AFTER the test, but that's just me!
  • I did my 1 hour on my birthday...I had soda, ice cream cake and cake about an hour before the test, and passed with flying colors.  but that is just my opinion...and I love cake!

This! It's not going to affect your levels the day before. Enjoy.

  • Ok ladies, you've convinced me...I'm eating the cake & ice cream! Big Smile

  • My doctor told me that simple carbs (anything that is just straight sugar, like ice cream, candy, cookies, etc) digest super fast. No more than maybe 2 hours. He also said for people like me, with an extremely high metabolism, as fast as 15 minutes! But I failed my 1 hr and passed my 3 hr test.

  • Well ladies I ate the cake and the ice cream too and passed with flying colors. Only thing that came back was that my iron levels were a bit low so I'm going to be on an iron pill! I'm ok with that! Smile
