1st Trimester

Mystic Tan

I've always heard these are safe while pregnant... but when I started actually looking into it and doing some more research online, I found a bunch of conflicting information and several people suggested not doing it in the 1st trimester.  I'm wondering if it's just the mystic tan formula that's in question? (This is the spray tan booth.)  I've also looked at a few airbrush tanning places and most of them claim to be totally safe... I'm wondering if the ingredients vary?  I'm not overly-cautious about pregnancy do's and dont's (ie I had sushi for dinner).  i just can't find consistent info...

Experiences? Thoughts?

Re: Mystic Tan

  • I've heard nothing but NO re: spray tans and self tanners. What does your doctor say? It seems like an unnecessary risk to me.

  • It is all spray tans.  There was recently stories in the news that DHA is not safe for mucus membranes (and the spray gets on your lips, in your nose, in your eyes) and something about the formula was found to mutate genes or something.

I had some spray tans last pregnancy, but this time in my Dr's packet it says to avoid self tanners and spray tans.

I wouldn't lose sleep over doing it once and awhile, but would I do it once or twice a week for months?  No.

  • I'm getting a spray tan tonight and I just found out the news last Sunday.  I called my dr. office sine I haven't had my first apt and they said its ok and it wont hurt or affect baby.  My tan isn't a spray tan from Mystic though.  I'm going to a spa and getting someone to spray me.  This is a DHA/sugar based compound and the spa says they have lots of ventilation + they have lots of preggo clients that get this tan.  One thing I've heard about tanning booths is not proper ventilation (I've gotten one before and it is hard to breathe for the time you are enclosed in the booth.  I'm going to avoid in-taking the fumes as best as I can by turning my head.  From my experience with both types of tans in the past-the tan at a salon is better ventilation. Talk to your dr and see what they recommend.

I would avoid getting the tan but over Memorial Day weekend I got burnt BADLY and the worst tan lines ever that will show and since I'm in  my friends wedding I want to look presentable in the short/ strapless dress.
