Toddlers: 24 Months+

How much milk does your 2yo drink?

DD still has a sippy of milk in the morning and a sippy of milk before bed. She gets some milk at daycare too.

Does anyone else still give milk this way? Am I giving her too much? She at about 18oz+.

We haven't been in for her two year appt. yet so I'll ask the pedi too.

  • mine gets about this much, too- about 8oz in the morning (like coffee) and 8oz after she eats dinner. she drinks water with meals and throughout the day.

  • DD1 gets milk with all 3 meals and before bed. Sometimes she only drinks and oz or two, sometimes she down the sippy (8ish oz). I honestly don't pay much attention to the total oz, as long as it's not interfering with her eating.

DS will be three in August. He gets 5oz of 1% at breakfast and dinner and 5oz of chocolate at lunch. He also gets string cheese for most lunches (his choice) and sometimes yogurt. We are not planning in changing anytime soon as he is happy with this.

Probably too much a day. He gets 4-5 oz in the AM, I sent 2 4 oz sippies to school & He has at least 4 oz with dinner, if not more. I don't fight it - if he asks for it, I give it.

ETA: he eats yogurt & some kind of cheese every day too.

  • My ped says it is actually recommended to remain at around 24 oz a day.  My son is stil ltaking 3 cups a day (around 28 oz), some days less and somedays (GASP) more.  He loves milk!  We also do yogurt and cheese every day.  Dairy junky!

  • She has about 8 oz in the morning and 8 oz after her nap (well, she actually drinks a mixture of 40% yogurt smoothie 60% milk because she won't drink straight milk).

  • mine get offered milk at 3 meals but don't always drink much, esp DD who will actually choose water if given the choice. I give her milk sometimes just to try to get her to drink some but she eats yogurt & they both get cheese, etc so I'm not too worried.
  • I've never been able to get DD to drink anywhere near the recommended amount of milk ever since she was 1.  The most she's had is 10 oz.  Most days, she'll drink 8.  Her pedi said it's ok since she gets calcium from other sources during the day(yogurt, cheese, etc.)
  • I don't know specific oz and it varies by day... He drinks out of Take & Toss straw cups most of the time or a small cup with no lid. When he takes the straw cup I fill it about 2/3 full and he'll drink most of it between his meal and shortly after. When it's the cup with no lid I would only say a few oz (no more than 4). He also drinks about 2/3 of the straw cup of juice with breakfast.

When we went to the pedi a few weeks ago they asked and I said about 15oz at the time and they didn't say anything either way. He drinks 1% now with the rest of us, but also loves string cheese and yogurt so I guess total dairy would be close to 15-20 oz, again depending on the day.

  • My DD is 3 now but we've been offering her milk with meals since she stopped nursing at 16 months. She much prefers almond milk to cows milk, and I pour maybe 2/3 a cup for each serving, but if she wants more or less than that than thats fine too. (I remember my pedi saying three 2/3 cup servings per day was ideal). The rest of the day she drinks water (or diluted juice at the babysitters).

  • My 23 mo has recently decided she wants to nurse more often, so she nurses 4x a day and 1-2x a night.

She drinks CM with meals, but I'd say she'll drink maybe 12oz in a day. I don't keep track of how much she drinks anymore. Usually she prefers water, but then some days she'll drink a bunch of milk.
